Email Thread: What We Need Before Tuesday Is Confirmation
From: Sarah Jenkins, Principal Structural Engineer

Subject: Urgent: Southern Transept Deflection, St. Jude's Priory
Date: Friday, 14 October, 17:14
David,
What we need before Tuesday is formal written confirmation to install temporary steel shoring jacks beneath the fourteenth-century tie-beams in the southern transept.
Our optical tilt sensors recorded an additional 4.2 millimetres of downward deflection following Thursday night's cloudburst. It was the eastern principal rafter that absorbed the bulk of the runoff when the valley gutter overflowed, and the timber joint is now visibly spreading at the mortise. Under no circumstances can this truss endure another sustained downpour without mechanical support. The Met Office projects gale-force winds and heavy rain for Tuesday morning. Should the roof suffer further lateral movement, the entire hammerbeam assembly could experience progressive shear failure.
