Integrated Stylistic Variation in a Long Essay

The sentence that changed Helena's argument was only six words long:

"Only then did the narrator lie."

She had been writing for three days about a novel in which very little seemed to happen. A woman returned to her childhood home. A brother refused to open a locked room. A neighbour kept leaving flowers at the gate. No murder, no confession, no dramatic revelation.

And yet something in the narrator's voice kept shifting.

Helena's first draft tried to explain those shifts one by one: inversion here, a cleft there, a fragment in the next paragraph, a repeated clause near the end. Technically accurate. Completely unreadable.

She deleted eight pages.

Then she started again with a better question:

What happens to a reader when syntax changes before the story explains why?

That question allowed the grammar to become part of the interpretation rather than a catalogue of devices.
