Maya needed to get her father to the afternoon train . The old car in their street had an empty tank , and the fuel shop on the corner was closed . Her neighbour , Mr Shah , pointed at the small car plugged in beside his door . " Take this one , " he said . " It does not drink gasoline . " An electric car keeps its energy in a battery , not in a tank of gasoline or diesel . Maya looked for a fuel cap and could not find one . A cable ran from the car to a box on the wall . Mr Shah unplugged it . He had left the car there all night . At home , a full charge often takes several hours . He had started before bed , so the battery was ready now . On the road the car was quiet . There was no smell of exhaust , because this kind of car lets out none while it drives . That is not the same as no pollution at all . The electricity may still have come from a power plant . The street itself got no smoke from this car . Maya could not see an exhaust pipe . She asked about oil . A battery car has no engine oil to change , and it has no spark plugs . It has fewer moving parts than the car with the empty tank . It can still wear out . It simply does not need those two jobs . They reached the station with time to spare . A public charger stood in the car park , with a thicker cable than the one at the house . A fast public charger can add a useful amount of electricity in about half an hour , and it often slows down before the battery is completely full . Maya did not need it . The night on the home cable had been enough for this trip . Her father caught the train . She drove the little car back , plugged the cable in again , and left it for the night . The old car was still waiting for gasoline . This one was waiting for the wall .
