The Pen She Almost Left
Ruth wants the insulin out of her father's bag before he gets home. A neighbor read that it is made with bacteria and told her not to let him use the pen. He is due a dose after supper. If she leaves the pen at the pharmacy, he does not get it. She stands at the counter with the pen still cold in her hand, trying to choose which danger is real.
The pharmacist does not treat the fear as silly. She says the neighbor heard something true and stopped too early. For a long time, insulin for people came from the pancreases of pigs and cattle. It worked for many of them, and the amount on hand depended on those animals. Some people's bodies also met the animal hormone as if it did not belong.
