IV . The House of Bricks The third little pig takes the west road . The road is full of stones . It goes up and down the hills . The little pig walks slowly . He looks all around him . He walks for a whole day . At night , he sleeps under a tree . He is cold . “ Tomorrow I need a house , ” he thinks . The next day , he sees a man with a cart . The cart is full of bricks . They are red and hard . “ Good morning , ” says the little pig . “ Good morning , little pig . What do you want ? ” “ Please , man , give me those bricks . I want to build a house with them . ” “ All the bricks ? ” asks the man . “ Yes , please . A house needs a lot of bricks . ” The man thinks for a moment . Then he smiles . “ Very well . They are yours . ” The man puts the bricks down by the road . Then he goes away with his cart . “ Thank you , thank you ! ” calls the little pig . It is not easy to build a house of bricks . It is a lot of work . The little pig works from morning to night . He puts down one brick . Then another . And another . And one more . He works one day , two days , three days . He works for a whole week ! In the evening , his feet and his back hurt . But in the morning , he starts again . “ I am very tired , ” he says . “ But it is nearly done . ” Little by little , the house gets bigger . It has four red walls . It has a very strong wooden door . It has two small windows . And on the roof , there is a tall chimney . Inside , under the chimney , there is a fire . And by the fire , there is a big pot with a lid . At last , the house is ready . The little pig goes outside and looks at it . “ What a pretty house ! ” he says . “ And how strong ! I live here now . ” That night , the little pig sleeps in his new house . He sleeps very well . A few days later , the wolf comes along the west road . As always , he is hungry . He sees the house of bricks and smells the air . “ Mmm , there is another little pig in there , ” he thinks . The wolf knocks at the door , just like before . Knock , knock , knock . “ Little pig , little pig , let me come in . ” The little pig does not open the door . He answers : “ No , no , by the hair of my chiny chin chin ! ” “ Then I’ll huff , and I’ll puff , and I’ll blow your house in ! ” And the wolf huffs , and he puffs . He huffs and puffs again . He puffs and huffs with all his strength . But the house does not fall down . Not one brick moves ! Inside , the little pig looks out of the window . At first he is afraid . But the house does not move . The walls are strong . Then the little pig smiles . The wolf blows one more time . He blows so hard that his face goes red . But the house stays the same . At last , the wolf sits down on the ground . He cannot blow any more . “ This house does not fall down , ” he thinks . “ I need a new plan . ”
