V . Mr Smith’s Turnips The wolf thinks for a while . Then he stands up . He goes to the door . He speaks in a very sweet voice . “ Little pig , I know a place with very nice turnips . ” “ Where ? ” asks the little pig . “ Oh , in Mr Smith’s field , near here . Be ready tomorrow morning , and I’ll come for you . We can go together and get some turnips for dinner . ” The little pig thinks for a moment . “ Very well , ” he says . “ I’ll be ready tomorrow . What time do you want to go ? ” “ Oh , at six o’clock . ” “ At six o’clock , then . See you tomorrow , wolf . ” The wolf goes away . He is very happy . “ Tomorrow at six , I am going to eat that little pig , ” he thinks . But the little pig thinks too . He sits by the fire and talks to himself . “ The wolf does not want to eat turnips . He wants to eat a little pig ! But I know where Mr Smith’s field is too . ” That night , the little pig goes to bed very early . At five o’clock , he gets up . It is still dark . It is cold , and there is nobody on the road . The little pig opens the door quietly . He looks this way and that way . He does not see the wolf . He takes a pot and leaves the house . Mr Smith’s field is behind a hill . The little pig runs along the road . Soon he gets to the field . There are a lot of turnips there . They are big and white . The little pig pulls a turnip out of the ground . Then another , and another . Soon the pot is full . “ What nice turnips ! ” he says . “ And now , home . Quick ! ” The little pig goes home with his pot . He goes in and locks the door . He puts the pot of turnips on the fire . Soon the whole house smells of turnips . At six o’clock , the wolf comes . He knocks at the door . Knock , knock , knock . “ Little pig , are you ready ? ” “ Ready ? ” says the little pig . “ I am back already ! I have a pot full of turnips for dinner . ” “ What ? Already ? ” asks the wolf . “ Yes . I went out at five , and I was back before six . Mr Smith’s turnips are very good , wolf ! ” The wolf smells the air . It is true . The house smells of turnips . The wolf is very angry . The little pig is quicker than him ! But the wolf does not shout . He thinks and thinks . “ This little pig is clever , ” he thinks . “ But I am clever too . One day I am going to catch him . ” VI . The Apple Tree at Merry - garden So the wolf speaks again , in his sweetest voice . “ Little pig , I know where there is a very nice apple tree . ” “ Where ? ” asks the little pig . “ Down at Merry - garden , ” says the wolf . “ Don’t trick me this time . I’ll come for you at five o’clock tomorrow . Then we can get some apples . ” “ Very well , ” says the little pig . “ Tomorrow at five . ” That night , the little pig does not sleep much .
