The three bears walk along the path in the wood . The Great , Huge Bear walks first , with his big steps . The Middle Bear walks after him . And the Little , Small , Wee Bear walks last . “ Where are we going ? ” asks the Little , Small , Wee Bear . “ To the river , ” says the Great , Huge Bear . “ And then home . ” The wood is green and full of light . The Little , Small , Wee Bear runs ahead . Then he stops and looks at everything . He looks at the flowers . He looks at a yellow butterfly . He looks at a red squirrel in a tree . “ Hello , squirrel ! ” he says . But the squirrel does not answer . It runs up the tree and hides in the leaves . “ Why doesn’t the squirrel talk to me ? ” asks the Little , Small , Wee Bear . “ Because it is afraid , ” says the Middle Bear . “ We are bears . For a squirrel , we are very big . ” “ But I am not big ! ” says the Little , Small , Wee Bear . The Great , Huge Bear laughs in his great , rough , gruff voice . And the three bears walk on . III . Goldilocks Near the wood there lives a little girl . She has long hair with lots of curls . The curls are yellow , like gold . When the sun is out , they shine . So everyone calls her Goldilocks . Goldilocks wants to see everything . She wants to touch everything . She wants to try everything . But she is not a very good girl . She is naughty . She never listens to anyone . She never asks . She almost never says “ please ” . And she does not like to wait . This morning , Goldilocks leaves her house very early . She eats nothing . No bread , no milk . She wants to go to the wood . And she wants to go alone . She walks along a little path between the trees . She picks flowers . She sings and jumps . She runs after a butterfly . She walks and walks . And soon she is very far from home . The wood is very big . There are many paths in it . Goldilocks goes down one path , then down another . She looks left and right . She does not know this place . Now she is very hungry . And she is very tired . “ I am so hungry ! ” she says . “ And I am so tired ! ” Then , all at once , she sees a house between the trees . It is a little house with a green door and two big windows . “ A house in the wood ! ” she says . “ Who lives here ? ” Goldilocks goes up to the house . First she looks in at the window . She sees a kitchen . On the table there are three bowls . By the table there are three chairs . But she sees nobody . “ Three bowls and three chairs , ” she thinks . “ A great bowl , a middle bowl and a little bowl . How funny ! ” Then she looks in through the keyhole . She sees nobody there either . “ Hello ? ” she says . “ Is anybody at home ? ” Nobody answers . So Goldilocks pushes the door . And the door opens . It is not locked . It is not locked because the bears are good bears . They never hurt anyone . And they think that nobody wants to hurt them .
