The Great , Huge Bear looks at his chair . The hard cushion is not straight . “ Somebody has been sitting in my chair ! ” says the Great , Huge Bear in his great , rough , gruff voice . The Middle Bear looks at his chair . The soft cushion is flat and low . “ Somebody has been sitting in my chair ! ” says the Middle Bear in his middle voice . And what about the third chair ? You already know ! “ Somebody has been sitting in my chair , and has broken it ! ” says the Little , Small , Wee Bear in his little , small , wee voice . The seat of his chair is on the floor . Now the Little , Small , Wee Bear is even sadder . First his porridge . And now his chair ! “ My chair ! My nice little chair ! ” he says . And this time he really cries . “ Who is in our house ? ” asks the Middle Bear . “ I don’t know , ” says the Great , Huge Bear . “ But maybe they are still here . ” “ Upstairs ? ” asks the Little , Small , Wee Bear very quietly . “ Let’s go and see , ” says the Great , Huge Bear . The three bears go up the stairs . They go slowly , one after the other . The Great , Huge Bear goes first . The Middle Bear goes next . And the Little , Small , Wee Bear goes last . VIII . The Open Window The three bears go into their bedroom . The window is open , like every morning . The Great , Huge Bear looks at his bed . His pillow is not in its place . “ Somebody has been lying in my bed ! ” says the Great , Huge Bear in his great , rough , gruff voice . The Middle Bear looks at his bed . His pillow is not in its place either . “ Somebody has been lying in my bed ! ” says the Middle Bear in his middle voice . Then the Little , Small , Wee Bear looks at his bed . His pillow is in its place . But on the pillow there is a head . It is a head with golden curls . And that head is not in its place , because it has no business there ! “ Somebody has been lying in my bed , and here she is ! ” says the Little , Small , Wee Bear in his little , small , wee voice . Goldilocks sleeps like a log . In her sleep , she hears the voice of the Great , Huge Bear . But for her , it is like the noise of the wind . Or like thunder far away . She does not open her eyes . In her sleep , she hears the voice of the Middle Bear too . But it is like a voice in a dream . And she sleeps on . But the voice of the Little , Small , Wee Bear is not like that . It is very high and very thin . It goes into her ears like a needle . And Goldilocks wakes up at once . She opens her eyes . And she sees three bears ! They stand on one side of the bed . There is a great bear , a middle bear and a little bear . All three bears look at her . “ Oh ! Bears ! ” she cries .
