III . The Wolf Red Riding Hood goes into the wood . The trees are very tall . There is a lot of shade , and it is cool . The path is narrow . It goes between the trees . The girl walks slowly , as her mother tells her . She does not look left or right . She only looks at the path . She thinks about Grandma and about the cake . Then , all at once , a wolf comes out of the trees . He is a big grey wolf . He has big ears and yellow eyes . He stands on the path , in front of the girl . Red Riding Hood does not know that the wolf is a bad animal . She knows nothing about wolves . So she is not afraid . “ Good morning , Red Riding Hood , ” says the wolf in a kind voice . “ Good morning , Wolf , ” says the girl with a smile . “ What a pretty hood you have ! ” says the wolf . “ Thank you . It is a present from my grandma , ” says the girl . “ Where are you going so early , Red Riding Hood ? ” asks the wolf . “ I am going to my grandma’s house , ” she says . “ And what have you got in your apron ? ” asks the wolf . “ Some cake and a bottle of wine , ” says the girl . “ My mother made the cake last night . My grandma is ill and weak . The cake and the wine can make her strong again . ” The wolf looks at the apron . Then he looks at the girl . He looks at her from head to toe . He is very hungry . But he does nothing . He only looks and listens . “ And where does your grandma live , Red Riding Hood ? ” he asks . “ She lives in the wood , a good fifteen minutes from here , ” says the girl . “ Her house is under the three big oak trees . There are some nut trees near it . You must know it . ” “ Yes , yes , of course , ” says the wolf . The girl tells the wolf everything . She does not know that it is a mistake . The wolf smiles . His teeth are very white and very big . But Red Riding Hood sees nothing bad . The wolf thinks : “ What a sweet , soft little girl ! What a lovely bite for me ! She is sure to taste better than the old woman . I must be very clever . Then I can eat them both . ” But he says nothing . He only smiles again . “ Are you walking through the wood alone ? ” asks the wolf . “ Yes . I am a big girl now , ” says Red Riding Hood . “ I know the way very well . ” “ Very good , very good , ” says the wolf . “ Then let’s walk together for a while . ” IV . The Flowers in the Wood The wolf walks next to Red Riding Hood for a while . He is very kind . He talks about the sun , the trees and the blue sky . Then he stops and says , “ Look , Red Riding Hood . What pretty flowers there are here ! Why don’t you look at them ? And the birds sing so sweetly . Can’t you hear them ? You walk along so seriously , like a girl on her way to school . But out here in the wood , everything is so merry . ” Red Riding Hood looks up . She sees the sun between the trees . The sunbeams dance here and there on the green grass . And there are flowers all around : red , yellow , white and blue flowers . In the trees , the birds sing .
