“ That is true , ” says the girl . “ The wood is so pretty today ! ” Then she thinks : “ Grandma is ill . I can take her some fresh flowers . She is sure to like them . It is still early . I have time . ” The girl looks at the path . Then she looks at the flowers . “ Mum says I must not leave the path . But the flowers are very near . Just for a minute , ” she thinks . And Red Riding Hood leaves the path . She runs between the trees to look for flowers . The wolf watches her and smiles . Then he goes away without a word . The girl sees a red flower and picks it . But a little further on , there is another flower . It is even prettier . The girl runs and picks it too . And there , further away , is a prettier one . And then another , and one more . “ A blue flower for Grandma , ” says the girl . “ And a yellow one . And this white one too . What a pretty bunch ! ” So she goes further and further away . She goes deeper and deeper into the wood . She cannot see the path now . She does not think about her mother . She does not think about the bottle . She only thinks about the flowers . She looks for flowers under the trees and next to the stones . She listens to the birds . She looks at a little white moth . She is very happy . The sun climbs higher in the sky , and time goes by . But the girl does not know it . And the wolf ? He is not with her now . But the girl does not think about him . She is very busy with her flowers . V . The Wolf at Grandma’s House At the same time , the wolf runs along the path . He runs very fast . He does not look at the flowers . He does not listen to the birds . He goes straight to Grandma’s house . “ The girl is busy with her flowers , ” thinks the wolf . “ I can get there before her . First the old woman . Then the girl . ” Soon he comes to the three big oak trees . There is the small , old house . The nut trees are near it . It is all very quiet . The wolf goes to the door . He does not make a sound . He listens . There is someone inside . Inside the house , Grandma is in bed . She is ill and weak . She is cold . She is alone , and she is thinking about her little girl . The wolf knocks at the door . Knock , knock . “ Who is there ? ” asks Grandma . “ It is me , Red Riding Hood , ” says the wolf . “ I have got some cake and wine for you . Open the door , Grandma . ” “ Oh , how nice , my dear ! ” says Grandma . “ The door is not locked . Just lift the latch and come in . I am very weak , and I cannot get out of bed . ”
