VII . The Huntsman A huntsman is walking along the path , past Grandma’s house . He is a tall , strong man . He has a gun . He knows the wood well , and he knows Grandma . All at once , he hears a noise . Someone is snoring . The snoring is very , very loud . The huntsman stops and thinks : “ How the old woman snores ! That is very odd . She never snores like that . I must go in . Maybe she needs help . ” He goes into the house . On the table there is a piece of cake , a bottle of wine and a lot of flowers . The huntsman goes to the bed . And there , in Grandma’s bed , he sees the wolf . The wolf is asleep with his mouth open . He is wearing Grandma’s nightcap . “ So here you are , you bad old wolf ! ” says the huntsman . “ I have been looking for you for a long time ! ” The huntsman lifts his gun . He wants to shoot . But then he thinks : “ And the old woman ? Where is she ? I am sure she is in the wolf’s belly . Maybe she is still alive . I must not shoot . ” So he puts down his gun . He finds a pair of scissors in the house . Very slowly , with great care , he starts to cut open the wolf’s belly . The wolf is asleep . He does not move . The huntsman makes two cuts . And he sees something red . It is a red hood ! He makes two more cuts . And the girl jumps out . “ Oh , I was so scared ! ” cries Red Riding Hood . “ It was so dark inside the wolf ! ” Then Grandma comes out . She is alive , but she is very weak . She can hardly breathe . “ Grandma ! ” says Red Riding Hood . And she gives her a big hug . The wolf is still asleep . Red Riding Hood has an idea . She runs out of the house . She looks for big , heavy stones . She brings one , and another , and one more . The three of them fill the wolf’s belly with the stones . A little later , the wolf opens his eyes . He sees the huntsman and wants to run away . He jumps out of bed . But the stones are very , very heavy . The wolf takes one step and falls to the floor . And there he lies , dead . “ At last ! ” says the huntsman . “ This wolf is never going to eat anyone again . ” Now all three of them are very happy . “ Are you all right , little girl ? ” asks the huntsman . “ Yes , sir . Thank you very much , ” says Red Riding Hood . “ And you , madam ? How are you ? ” asks the huntsman . “ I am alive , and it is all thanks to you , ” says Grandma . “ But , little girl , what happened here ? ” asks the huntsman . Red Riding Hood tells him everything . “ I walked through the wood , and I met a wolf . He was very kind to me . He talked to me about the flowers and the birds . So I left the path to look for flowers . And the wolf got here before me . ” “ Wolves are very clever , ” says the huntsman . “ That is why you must always stay on the path . ” The huntsman takes the wolf’s skin . Then he goes home with it .
