Inside , everything is small , clean and pretty . In the middle of the room there is a table with a white cloth . On the table there are seven little plates . Next to each plate there is a little knife , a little fork and a little spoon . There are also seven little cups of wine and seven little pieces of bread . By the wall there are seven little beds , all in a row . Each bed has a white sheet . “ What a pretty house ! ” says Snow White . “ But who lives here ? Everything is so small . ” Snow White is very hungry and very thirsty . But she does not want to take all of one person’s food . So she eats a little bread from each plate . And she drinks a little wine from each cup . “ Now nobody has less than the others , ” she thinks . Now she is very tired . She wants to sleep . She tries the first bed , but it is too long . She tries the second bed , but it is too short . At last she tries the seventh bed . Yes ! This bed is just right . Snow White lies down and says a little prayer . Soon she is asleep . It is dark when the owners of the little house come home . They are seven dwarfs . Dwarfs are very small men . They work in the mountains . All day they dig there for gold . The dwarfs come in with their seven little candles . And at once they see that something is wrong . “ Who sat on my chair ? ” asks the first dwarf . “ Who ate from my plate ? ” asks the second . “ Who took some of my bread ? ” asks the third . “ Who used my spoon ? ” asks the fourth . “ Who used my fork ? ” asks the fifth . “ Who cut with my knife ? ” asks the sixth . “ Who drank from my cup ? ” asks the seventh . The seven dwarfs look at each other . Who is in their house ? Nobody knows . Then the first dwarf looks at his bed . “ Who got into my bed ? ” he shouts . The others run to their beds . “ Somebody was in my bed too ! ” says one . “ And in mine ! ” says another . But the seventh dwarf says nothing . He looks at his bed with big eyes . There is a girl in his bed ! She sleeps like an angel . “ Come here ! Quick ! ” he says quietly . The others come with their candles and look at the girl . “ Oh , what a lovely child ! ” they say . The dwarfs are very happy to see her . They do not make a sound . They let her sleep . That night , the seventh dwarf has no bed . But he does not mind . He sleeps for one hour with each of the others . And so the night passes . IV . The Seven Dwarfs In the morning , Snow White opens her eyes . Seven little men are looking at her ! She is a little afraid . “ Good morning , ” says one of the dwarfs . “ Don’t be afraid . We are friends . ” “ What is your name ? ” asks another . “ My name is Snow White . ” “ And how did you get to our house , Snow White ? ” Snow White tells them her story .
