“ The queen hates me , ” she says . “ She wants to be the most beautiful woman in the land . So she sent me into the forest with her huntsman . But he was kind , and he let me live . Then I ran all day in the forest . And in the evening I found this little house . ” The dwarfs listen quietly . “ Poor child ! ” says one . “ What a bad queen ! ” says another . The dwarfs talk together for a moment . Then the first dwarf says : “ Listen , Snow White . You can stay here with us , if you like . You can look after the house . You can cook , make the beds , wash , sew and knit . And we can look after you . You will have everything you need here . ” “ Oh yes , I would love that ! ” says Snow White . “ Thank you so much ! ” From that day , Snow White lives in the little house . Every morning , the dwarfs go to the mountains . There they dig for copper and gold . And Snow White stays at home . She makes the beds and cleans the house . She washes , sews and cooks . When the dwarfs come home , the table is ready . They eat together and talk about their day . But the dwarfs are afraid for her . Every morning , before they go , they say : “ Be careful , Snow White . Soon the queen will know where you are . Do not open the door to anyone . ” “ Yes , yes . I know , ” she says . At the castle , the queen thinks Snow White is dead . One morning , she stands in front of her mirror . She is sure of the answer . “ Mirror , mirror on the wall , who is the most beautiful of all ? ” And the mirror answers : “ My queen , you are beautiful , it is true . But over the hills , with the seven dwarfs , lives Snow White . And she is a thousand times more beautiful than you . ” The queen cannot believe it . But the mirror never lies . So Snow White is alive ! “ That huntsman lied to me ! ” she shouts . “ The girl is not dead ! ” The queen cannot live like this . She thinks and thinks . At last she has a plan . V . The Laces The queen paints her face . She puts on old , ugly clothes . Now she looks like an old woman who sells things from door to door . Nobody can tell who she is . With a basket on her arm , the queen leaves the castle . She goes through the forest and over the seven hills . At last she comes to the dwarfs ’ house . She knocks at the door . “ Pretty things for sale ! Good things , cheap things ! ” she calls . Snow White looks out of the window . “ Good morning , ” she says . “ What are you selling ? ” “ Good things , pretty things , ” says the old woman . “ Laces of every colour . Look , look ! ” The old woman takes a lace out of her basket . It is long and bright , with many colours . Snow White thinks : “ She is a good old woman . I can let her in . ” She runs down , opens the door and buys the pretty lace . “ Oh , child , your dress is not laced well , ” says the old woman . “ Come here . I can put a new lace in it for you . ”
