The old woman puts the comb in her black hair . But the poison is very strong . At once the girl falls to the floor . She does not move . “ That is the end of you , ” says the queen . And she goes away . Luckily , that evening the dwarfs come home early . They see Snow White on the floor . “ The queen again ! ” says one of them . Soon they see the comb in her black hair . They take it out very slowly . And at that moment , Snow White opens her eyes . “ What happened to me ? ” she asks . She tells them everything : the old woman with the basket and her pretty combs . The dwarfs are very serious . “ Snow White , listen to us , ” says the first dwarf . “ The queen is very bad and very clever . And she will come back again . Do not open the door . And do not take anything from anyone . Nothing ! ” “ Yes , I promise , ” says Snow White . VII . The Apple At the castle , the queen goes to her mirror again . “ Mirror , mirror on the wall , who is the most beautiful of all ? ” And the mirror gives the same answer : “ My queen , you are beautiful , it is true . But Snow White lives with the seven dwarfs . And she is a thousand times more beautiful than you . ” The queen shakes with anger . “ Snow White must die ! ” she shouts . “ Even if it costs me my life ! ” The queen has a secret room . Nobody ever goes in there , only the queen . In this room , she makes an apple . From the outside , the apple is very pretty . One side is white , and the other side is red . Everyone who sees it wants it . But the apple has a secret . The white side is good , but the red side has poison in it . With one bite of the red side , a person dies . Then the queen paints her face again . She dresses like a farmer’s wife . She puts the apple in her basket . And she goes out to the hills once more . She comes to the little house and knocks at the door . Snow White puts her head out of the window . “ I am sorry , but I cannot open the door to anyone , ” she says . “ The seven dwarfs do not allow it . ” “ Oh , that is all right , ” says the woman . “ But take this apple . It is a present for you . ” “ No , thank you , ” says Snow White . “ I cannot take anything . ” “ Are you afraid ? ” asks the woman . “ Do you think there is poison in it ? Look . I will cut it in two . You eat the red half , and I will eat the white half . ” The woman cuts the apple in two . Then she eats the white half . It is the good half , of course . Snow White looks at the apple . It is so red and so pretty ! And the woman eats , and nothing happens to her . Snow White cannot wait any longer . She puts her hand out of the window and takes the red half .
