She takes one small bite . And at that moment she falls to the floor . She is dead , with the piece of apple still in her mouth . The queen looks in at the window and laughs . “ White as snow , red as blood , black as ebony ! ” she says . “ This time the dwarfs cannot wake you up . ” And she goes back to her castle . She goes straight to her mirror . “ Mirror , mirror on the wall , who is the most beautiful of all ? ” And at last the mirror answers : “ You , my queen . You are the most beautiful in the land . ” Now the queen’s bad heart is happy . As happy as a bad heart can be . VIII . The Glass Coffin In the evening , the dwarfs come home . They see Snow White on the floor . She does not breathe . She does not move . “ Snow White , open your eyes ! ” they cry . They lift her from the floor . They look for a tight lace . They look for a comb with poison . But they cannot find anything . They comb her hair . They wash her face with water and with wine . But nothing helps . She is dead . The dwarfs put her on a wooden bed . All seven of them sit down next to her . And they cry . They cry for her for three whole days . Then they want to put her in the ground . But they cannot do it . She does not look dead . Her cheeks are still red . Her face is as lovely as ever . She looks like a sleeping girl . “ We cannot put our dear girl in the cold , dark ground , ” say the dwarfs . So they make a glass coffin . A coffin is a long box for a dead person . In a glass coffin , everyone can see her from all sides . They put Snow White inside it . And on the top they write her name in gold letters : “ Snow White , the daughter of a king . ” They carry the coffin up to the top of a hill . And one of the dwarfs always stays next to it , day and night . The birds come too , and they cry for Snow White . First an owl comes . Then a raven comes . And last of all , a dove comes . The three birds stay by the coffin . A long , long time passes . Snow White lies in her glass coffin . She does not change . She is still as white as snow , as red as blood , and her hair is as black as ebony . IX . The Prince One day , a prince comes to the dwarfs ’ house . He is on a long journey , and he asks for a bed for the night . In the morning , the prince goes up the hill . He sees the glass coffin . He sees the girl inside . And he reads the gold letters . “ How beautiful she is ! ” he says . Then he goes to talk to the dwarfs . “ Let me have the coffin , ” he says . “ I want to take it to my castle . I will give you anything you want for it . ” “ No , ” say the dwarfs . “ We will not give her away . Not for all the gold in the world . ”
