IV . A Bath in the River One day , the cat hears some news at the palace . Tomorrow the king is going out in his coach . He is going along the river road with his daughter , the most beautiful princess in the world . The cat thinks very fast . Tomorrow is the big day . That night , the cat talks to his master . “ My master , do you want to be rich ? ” “ Of course I do ! ” “ Then listen carefully . Do what I say , and your fortune is made . ” “ And what must I do ? ” “ Very little . Tomorrow we go to the river together . You have a bath there , in a place I know . And leave the rest to me . ” “ A bath in the river ? Why ? ” “ Do not ask . Just trust me . ” The young man does not see why . But he knows the cat is very clever . So he says yes . The next morning , they go to the river . The sun is shining . The water is clean and cold . The cat shows his master a place near the road . “ Here , ” says the cat . “ Take off your clothes and get into the water . ” The young man takes off his clothes . They are old , poor clothes , full of holes . He leaves them on the grass . Then he gets into the river . “ Ooh ! It’s so cold ! ” While the young man is in the water , the cat takes the old clothes . He carries them behind some trees . There is a big stone there . The cat hides the clothes under the stone . Then he goes back to the road and listens . Soon he hears a noise . It is the sound of horses . It is the king’s coach ! It is a big gold coach with four white horses . Then the cat starts to shout very loudly : “ Help ! Help ! The Marquis of Carabas is drowning ! ” In the river , the young man is surprised . Drowning ? Him ? But he remembers the cat’s words : “ Leave the rest to me . ” So he stays in the water and says nothing . The king hears the shouts and puts his head out of the coach window . And who does he see ? The cat in boots , the cat with the rabbits and the partridges ! “ Stop ! ” shouts the king . The coach stops . “ Guards , to the river ! Quick ! Help the Marquis of Carabas ! ” The guards run to the river . They pull the poor Marquis out of the water . Meanwhile , the cat runs to the coach . He bows to the king . “ Oh , Your Majesty , what bad luck ! ” he says . “ What is wrong , Cat ? ” “ My lord was having a bath in the river . Suddenly some thieves came and took all his clothes . My lord shouted , ‘ Thieves ! Thieves ! ’ He shouted very loudly , but nobody heard him . And now he has no clothes ! ” But it is all a lie . There are no thieves . The clothes are under the stone . What a clever cat ! The king calls one of his servants . “ Quick ! Ride to the palace and bring one of my best suits . It is for the Marquis of Carabas . ”
