The men are very scared . He is only a cat , yes . But he is a very strange cat . He wears boots , he talks and he has very long claws . “ Yes , yes , Mr Cat , ” they say . “ The Marquis of Carabas . ” A little later , the coach comes . The king puts his head out of the window and looks at the meadow . “ Good morning , good people , ” says the king . “ Whose meadow is this ? ” “ It belongs to the Marquis of Carabas , Your Majesty ! ” say all the men together . They are afraid of the cat . The king looks at the young man . “ What a fine meadow you have , my lord Marquis ! ” Now the young man sees the cat’s game . He smiles and says : “ Yes , Your Majesty . It is a good meadow . It gives a lot of grass every year . ” Meanwhile , the cat is already far away . He always runs in front of the coach . Now he comes to a wheat field . There are other men there . They are cutting the wheat . “ Good people , ” says the cat , “ the king is coming along this road . Tell him that all this wheat belongs to the Marquis of Carabas . If you do not , I will chop you up into little pieces . As small as the meat in a pie ! ” The men look at his claws , and they are very scared . A moment later , the king comes . “ Good people , whose wheat is this ? ” “ It belongs to the Marquis of Carabas , Your Majesty ! ” “ Very good , my lord Marquis ! ” says the king . “ What a lot of wheat you have ! ” And it is the same all along the road . The cat always runs in front . He talks to all the people he meets . And he tells them all the same thing . And the king asks and asks : “ Whose cows are these ? ” “ They belong to the Marquis of Carabas ! ” “ And these sheep ? ” “ They belong to the Marquis of Carabas ! ” “ And this big forest ? ” “ It belongs to the Marquis of Carabas ! ” The king cannot believe it . “ How rich you are , my lord Marquis ! You have land everywhere ! ” The young man does not know what to say . He only says , “ Thank you , Your Majesty . ” The princess looks at the Marquis . She likes him more and more . But who really owns all this land ? Not the Marquis of Carabas , of course . It belongs to an ogre . VII . The Ogre At the end of the road there is a huge castle with very tall towers . It is the ogre’s castle . An ogre is a bad giant . He is very tall , very strong and very ugly . And he eats people . This ogre is very rich . He is the richest ogre in the world ! All the land along the road is his : the meadow , the wheat fields and the forest . The cat already knows a lot about this ogre . He often talks to the people near the castle . “ Who lives in that castle ? ” he asks . “ What is he like ? What can he do ? ” And the people tell him very strange things . The cat comes to the castle door and knocks . A servant opens the door .
