“ I think I will sit on it a little longer , ” says the mother . “ I have sat here so long now . A few more days are nothing . ” “ As you like , ” says the old duck , and she walks away . At last the big egg breaks . “ Peep , peep ! ” says the last baby . It comes out of the egg very slowly . How big it is ! And how ugly ! It is all grey . “ What a big duckling ! ” says the mother . “ He does not look like the others . Is he a turkey ? Well , tomorrow we go to the water . Then we can find out . He must go in , even if I push him in myself ! ” II . The First Swim The next day , the weather is lovely . The sun shines on the green leaves . The mother duck goes down to the river with all her family . Splash ! She jumps into the water . “ Quack , quack ! Come on , children ! Into the water ! ” One after another , the little ducks jump in . The water goes over their heads . But they come up again at once . And they swim very well ! Their legs move under the water all by themselves . Swimming is easy ! And the big grey duckling ? He is in the water too . He swims with the others . The mother watches him closely . “ No , that is not a turkey , ” she says . “ Look how well he uses his legs ! And he holds himself so straight . He is my own child . And he is not so very ugly , if you look at him in the right way . Quack , quack ! Come with me now , children . We are going to the farmyard . I want to show you to all the fine people there . But stay close to me . There are a lot of animals in the farmyard . Do not let anybody step on you ! And most of all , watch out for the cat ! ” The little ducks get out of the water . They walk in a line behind their mother . The last one in the line is the grey duckling . III . In the Farmyard There is a lot of noise in the farmyard . Two families of ducks are fighting over the head of an eel . And in the end . . . the cat takes the eel’s head ! “ You see , children ? That is the way of the world , ” says the mother duck . She rubs her beak on the ground . She wants the eel’s head too . “ Now , use your legs , ” she says . “ Let me see how well you can behave . Do you see that old duck over there ? She is the finest duck in all the farmyard . She has Spanish blood . That is why she is so big and grand . And do you see the red rag on her leg ? For a duck , that is a very great honour . Everybody knows her , the animals and the people too . Now bow your heads to her . No , no , not like that ! Do not turn your feet in . A good little duck puts his feet wide apart , like his father and mother . Like this . Very good . Now bend your necks and say ‘ quack ’ ! ”
