The little ducks do as they are told . But the other ducks look at them and say loudly : “ Look ! More ducks ! We have enough ducks here already ! ” “ And look at that one ! How ugly he is ! We do not want him here ! ” And one duck flies at the grey duckling and bites him in the neck . “ Leave him alone ! ” says his mother . “ He is not doing anything bad . ” “ Yes , but he is so big and so strange , ” says the unkind duck . “ So he must go . ” The old duck with the red rag speaks too . “ Your children are very pretty , ” she says to the mother . “ All but that one . What a pity ! Can you not make him a little better ? ” “ No , I cannot , madam , ” says the mother . “ He is not pretty , that is true . But he has a very good heart . And he swims as well as the others . Maybe even better ! I think he is going to grow prettier . And maybe a little smaller , too . He stayed in the egg too long . That is why his shape is not quite right . ” The mother touches the grey duckling’s neck with her beak . She makes his feathers smooth . “ And he is a boy , ” she says . “ So it does not matter so much . I think he is going to grow up strong . He can take care of himself . ” “ The other little ones are very sweet , ” says the old duck . “ Well , make yourselves at home . And if you find an eel’s head , you can bring it to me . ” So the family stays in the farmyard . But life is very hard for the poor grey duckling . He came out of his egg last , and he is so ugly . Everybody bites him and pushes him and laughs at him . Not only the ducks . The hens do it too ! “ He is too big ! ” they all say . There is a turkey in the farmyard too . He was born with sharp spurs on his feet . So he thinks he is an emperor . The turkey sees the duckling and puffs himself up . He looks like a ship with all its sails up . He runs straight at the duckling . “ Gobble , gobble , gobble ! ” shouts the turkey . His head goes all red with anger . The poor duckling does not know where to go . He is very sad , because all the farmyard laughs at him . IV . Away from the Farm So the days go by , and every day is worse . Nobody is kind to the poor duckling . Everybody chases him away . Even his brothers and sisters are unkind to him . “ You ugly thing ! ” they say . “ We hope the cat gets you ! ” And one day his mother says , “ Oh , my child ! I am sorry you ever came out of that egg . ” The ducks bite him . The hens hit him . And the girl who feeds the birds kicks him with her foot .
