“ Oh ! ” says the duckling quietly . “ I am so glad I am ugly . Even a dog does not want to bite me . ” He lies very still in the grass . Bang , bang ! The shots fly over his head . Late in the day , it is quiet at last . But the poor duckling is still too afraid to move . He waits for many more hours . Then he looks all around him , very slowly . And he runs away from the marsh as fast as he can . He runs over fields and meadows . But soon a storm comes . The wind is very strong . The duckling can hardly move . In the evening , he comes to a poor little house . It is so old that it is ready to fall down . It stands only because it cannot choose which side to fall on ! The storm gets worse and worse . The duckling cannot go on . He sits down next to the little house . Then he sees the door . It is broken , and it does not close well . There is a small hole at the bottom of the door . It is not big , but a duckling can get through it . Quietly , the duckling goes through the hole . At last he has a place for the night . VI . The Hen and the Cat An old woman lives in the little house . She lives there with a tomcat and a hen . The cat is the old woman’s favourite . She calls him “ My Little Son ” . He can make his back round . He can purr . And if you stroke his fur the wrong way , sparks fly from it ! The hen has very short legs . So her name is “ Chickie Short Legs ” . She lays very good eggs , and the old woman loves her like her own child . In the morning , the cat and the hen see the duckling . The cat begins to purr and the hen begins to cluck . “ What is that noise ? ” asks the old woman . She looks all around the room . The old woman cannot see very well . She sees the duckling and thinks he is a fat duck . A duck who is lost , far from home . “ Oh , what luck ! ” she says . “ A duck ! Soon I can have duck eggs . I hope it is not a drake . We must wait and see . ” A drake is a boy duck , and drakes do not lay eggs . So the duckling stays in the house for three weeks . But he does not lay a single egg . The cat is the master of the house , and the hen is the lady of the house . They always say , “ We and the world . ” They think they are half of the world . And the better half , of course ! The duckling thinks that other animals can have other ideas . But the hen does not want to hear that . “ Can you lay eggs ? ” she asks . “ No . ” “ Then please hold your tongue . ” “ Can you make your back round ? Can you purr ? Can you make sparks ? ” asks the cat .
