The ugly duckling watches them . He has a strange feeling inside . He turns round and round in the water like a wheel . He stretches his neck up towards them . And he gives a cry . It is so strange that he is afraid of it himself . Oh , those lovely , happy birds ! The duckling cannot forget them . When he cannot see them any more , he dives to the bottom of the water . He comes up again , very excited . He does not know the name of these birds . He does not know where they are flying . But he loves them more than any other bird in the world . He is not jealous of them . He only wants to be as lovely as they are . Poor ugly bird ! He does not want much . He only wants the ducks to be kind to him . Winter comes . Every day it is colder . The duckling must swim round and round all the time . If he stops , the water freezes . But every night , there is less open water . At last it is terribly cold . The ice cracks when he moves . The duckling moves his legs again and again . He does not want the ice to close . But then he cannot go on . He is too tired . He lies still . . . and the ice holds him fast . Early in the morning , a farmer walks by . He sees the duckling in the ice . He breaks the ice with his wooden shoe . Then he picks up the duckling and carries him home to his wife . It is warm in the house , and the duckling comes back to life . The children want to play with him . But the duckling thinks they want to hurt him . He is so afraid that he flies up . . . and lands in the milk ! The milk goes all over the room . The woman claps her hands . Now the duckling is even more afraid . He flies into the butter . Then into the flour , and out again . What a sight he is ! The woman screams . She tries to hit him with the tongs from the fire . The children laugh and shout . They run after the duckling and try to catch him . They fall over each other . What a noise ! Luckily , the door is open . The duckling gets out and hides in the bushes . He lies down in the new snow . He has no strength left . VIII . The Swans It is too sad to tell you about all the pain of that long , hard winter . But the winter ends . One morning , the duckling is lying in the tall grass on a marsh . He feels the warm sun . He hears the larks sing . He looks around him . It is spring , and the world is lovely ! The duckling moves his wings . How strong they are ! He moves them again and rises high into the air . He flies on and on . And suddenly , before he knows it , he is in a big garden . The apple trees are full of flowers . The elder trees smell sweet . They bend their long green branches down to a little river .
