She jumps . She misses . She jumps higher . She misses again . The fox knows a lot of tricks . She tries all of them . She climbs onto a big stone and jumps from there . She tries again and again , but the grapes are always too high . At last she is very tired . She sits down and looks up at the grapes . They are still there , big and black and sweet . The fox is sad , but she does not want anyone to see it . She stands up and puts her nose high in the air . “ Oh well , ” she says . “ Those grapes are sour . They are not ripe at all . I thought they were ripe , but I was wrong . Who wants sour grapes ? Not me ! ” And she walks away , still hungry . Moral : It is easy to hate what you cannot have . XI . The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse A country mouse lives in a little hole in a field . One day , he asks his good friend the town mouse to visit him . The town mouse comes . The country mouse takes his friend across the bare fields . They eat bits of old wheat and roots from under the bushes . The town mouse eats a little . Then he stops . “ My dear friend , ” he says . “ How can you live like this ? You live like an ant ! In my house in the town , there is food of every kind . Come with me , and you can eat all you want . ” “ All right , ” says the country mouse . “ I will come with you . ” So the two mice go to the town together . The town mouse lives in a big house . That night , he takes his friend into a room with a big cupboard . “ Now sit down and eat , ” says the town mouse . He brings bread , barley and beans . He brings dried figs , honey and raisins . Last of all , he brings a lovely piece of cheese from a basket . “ Oh my ! ” says the country mouse . “ What a lot of food ! My life in the country is so poor . I only have roots and old wheat . ” The two mice start to eat . But just then , the door opens ! Someone comes into the room . “ Run ! ” says the town mouse . The two mice run as fast as they can . They hide in a hole in the wall . The hole is very small . There is only just room for two mice . At last , the person goes out . The two mice come out of the hole and go back to the food . But then the door opens again ! Someone else comes in and takes something out of the cupboard . The mice run to the hole again . This time the country mouse is even more afraid . After a long time , the room is quiet again . The country mouse is still very hungry , but he does not go back to the food . “ My friend , ” he says , “ thank you for this lovely dinner . But I must go home . There is a lot of food here , but there is a lot of danger too . I want my bare fields and my roots . The food there is poor , but I can eat it in peace . ” And the country mouse goes back home to his field . Moral : It is better to eat a little in peace than a lot in fear .
