IV . The Dog and the Shadow A dog has a piece of meat . It is a good piece of meat , and the dog is very happy . He wants to eat it at home . On his way home , he comes to a small bridge over a river . He starts to walk over the bridge with the meat in his mouth . In the middle of the bridge , he looks down into the water . And what does he see ? He sees a dog in the water ! That dog has a piece of meat in his mouth too . And his piece is twice as big ! The dog does not know that it is only his own shadow in the water . He thinks it is another dog . “ Look at that ! ” he thinks . “ That dog has a bigger piece of meat than me . I want it ! ” He opens his mouth to bite the other dog . And his own piece of meat falls into the river . The other dog is gone . There was never another dog . It was only a shadow . And where is his own piece of meat ? The river is carrying it away . The dog runs along the side of the river , but he cannot get it . Soon he cannot see it any more . The dog stands by the river . He is very sad . “ I had a good piece of meat , ” he says . “ Why did I want more ? Now I have no meat at all . ” That night he goes to bed hungry . Moral : If you always want more , you may lose what you have . V . The Shepherd’s Boy and the Wolf There is a small village at the foot of a hill . Every day , a young boy takes the village sheep up the hill and watches them there . He is a shepherd’s boy . The days are long , and nothing happens . “ I am so bored , ” says the boy . “ Every day it is the same . Sheep , grass , sheep , grass . ” Then he has an idea . He runs to the top of the hill and shouts : “ Wolf ! Wolf ! There is a wolf here ! Help ! ” The people in the village hear him . They stop their work , take big sticks and run up the hill . “ Where is the wolf ? ” they ask . The boy laughs . “ There is no wolf ! It was a joke ! Ha , ha , ha ! ” The people are angry , and they go back to the village . A few days later , the boy shouts again : “ Wolf ! Wolf ! Help me ! ” Again the people run up the hill . And again there is no wolf . The boy laughs at them . Later the boy does it again , and then one more time . Each time the people come , and each time he laughs at them .
