VII . The Milkmaid and Her Pail A farmer has a young daughter . One morning , she is in the field with the cows . Her pail is full of fresh white milk . She puts the pail on her head and walks back to the farmhouse . As she walks , she starts to dream . “ I will sell this milk at the market , ” she thinks . “ And with the money , I will buy eggs . Three hundred eggs ! “ Some eggs will go bad , of course . But the other eggs will hatch , and little chickens will come out of them . Two hundred and fifty little chickens ! “ The chickens will grow big and fat . I will sell them at the market when the price is high . And then I will have a lot of money . “ With that money , I will buy a lovely new dress . In my new dress , I will go to all the Christmas parties . All the young men will want to marry me . They will all come and ask : ‘ Will you marry me ? ’ “ But I will not say yes . Oh no ! I will throw my head back like this , and I will say no to every one of them ! ” And she throws her head back , just like that . Oh no ! The pail falls from her head . The milk runs all over the road . The girl looks at the ground . There is no milk now . There is no money for eggs . There are no eggs and no chickens . There is no new dress , and there are no parties . There is only an empty pail . She picks up the pail and walks slowly back to the farmhouse . Moral : Do not count your chickens before they hatch . VIII . The Miller , His Son and the Donkey A miller and his son want to sell their donkey at the fair in the next town . So they take the donkey and start walking . Soon they see some women by a well . They are talking and laughing . “ Look at those two ! ” says one of the women . “ What fools ! They have a donkey , and they are walking ! Why don’t they ride ? ” The miller hears this . “ Get on the donkey , son , ” he says . So the son gets on the donkey , and the father walks next to him . After a while , they meet some old men . “ Look at that lazy boy ! ” says one old man . “ Young people have no respect for the old these days . He rides , and his poor old father walks . Get down , boy ! Let your father rest his old legs ! ” “ Get down , son , ” says the miller . The boy gets down , and the father gets on the donkey . Soon they meet some women and children . “ Oh , look at that lazy old man ! ” they shout . “ He is riding , and the poor little boy cannot keep up ! Shame on you ! ” “ Come up , son , ” says the miller . And the boy sits behind his father on the donkey . Now they are near the town . A man from the town stops them . “ Good day , friend , ” he says . “ Is that your donkey ? ” “ Yes , it is , ” says the miller . “ Really ? I don’t think so , ” says the man . “ Look at the way you load him ! Two people on one little donkey ! You two can carry the poor animal better than he can carry you . ” The miller and his son get down .
