I . The Little Old House A little old man and a little old woman live in a little old house . The house stands at the edge of a wood . It has a small garden , a green gate and a red door . The old man and the old woman are kind people . They work hard every day . The old man works in the garden . The old woman cooks and cleans the house . They are happy , but there is one sad thing . They have no child . They want a little child very much , but they do not have one . So the house is always very quiet . “ Our house is too quiet , ” says the old woman one morning . “ Yes , it is , ” says the old man . “ I would like to hear a child in it . ” “ So would I , ” says the old woman . “ A little boy to talk to . A little boy to laugh with . ” The old man goes out to the garden . The old woman goes into the kitchen . Today is baking day . She wants to make gingerbread . She takes a big bowl . She puts flour in the bowl . Then she puts in butter , sugar , milk and ginger . She mixes it all with a big spoon . Soon she has a soft brown dough . She puts the dough on the table and rolls it out . She cuts out some round cakes and some cakes like stars . Then she has an idea . “ I know ! ” she says . “ I can make a little boy out of gingerbread ! ” She takes a knife and cuts out a cake in the shape of a little boy . He has a round head , two arms , a little fat body and two legs . She gives him two eyes and a nose . She gives him a big , happy smile . Then she puts three little buttons down his front . She looks at him and smiles . “ What a fine little boy ! ” she says . “ You are the best cake of all . ” She puts all the cakes into the hot oven . The gingerbread boy goes in last . Then she shuts the oven door . “ There , ” she says , and she laughs . “ Now we have a little boy in the house . A little gingerbread boy ! ” II . Out of the Oven The oven is hot , and the kitchen is warm . Soon there is a good smell in the house . It is the smell of hot gingerbread . The old woman sits at the table and waits . She looks at the clock . Then she looks at the oven . “ Is he ready now ? ” she thinks . “ Not yet . Soon . ” At last she goes to the oven to see . Is the gingerbread ready ? She opens the oven door . Then a very strange thing happens . The little gingerbread boy moves ! He opens his eyes . He sits up . Then he jumps out of the oven and onto the floor . “ Oh ! ” says the old woman . “ Oh my ! ” She holds out her hands . “ Come here , my little boy , ” she says . “ Come to me . ”
