But the gingerbread boy does not come to her . He runs across the kitchen and out of the door ! The old woman runs to the door . “ Husband ! Husband ! ” she calls . “ Come quick ! The gingerbread boy is running away ! ” The old man drops his spade . He runs to her from the garden . “ A gingerbread boy ? ” he says . “ Running ? Where ? ” “ There ! ” says the old woman . “ Look ! ” The little gingerbread boy runs down the garden path and through the green gate . Then he runs away along the road by the wood . “ Stop ! Stop ! ” shouts the old woman . “ Come back ! ” shouts the old man . The old man and the old woman run after him as fast as they can . But they are old , and their legs are slow . The gingerbread boy is very small , but his legs are very fast . He looks back at them and laughs . Then he shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” The old man and the old woman run and run . But they cannot catch him . At last they stop by the side of the road . “ My little boy ! ” cries the old woman . “ He is not a little boy now , ” says the old man . “ He says he is a man . The Gingerbread Man ! ” III . The Men in the Barn The Gingerbread Man runs on and on . He runs past the wood and along a country road . The sun is shining . The birds are singing . He is very happy . “ I am free ! ” he thinks . “ Nobody can catch me . I am very , very fast ! ” Soon he comes to a big barn . The doors of the barn are open . The barn is full of men . The men are working with the wheat . They hit the wheat with long sticks , and the grain falls out . It is hard , hot work , and the men are hungry . The Gingerbread Man does not stop . He runs past the open doors , and he calls out to the men : “ I ran away from a little old woman and a little old man . And I can run away from you , I can ! ” The men stop work and look out . “ What is that ? ” says one man . “ It is a little gingerbread man ! ” says another man . “ And he can talk ! ” “ I am hungry , ” says a third man . “ Let’s catch him ! ” The men put down their sticks . They all run out of the barn and after the Gingerbread Man . They run through the farm and out into the road . They are big and strong , and they run fast . But the Gingerbread Man is faster . He looks back and shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” The men run and run . But they are tired from their work . One by one , they stop . “ He is too fast for us , ” says one man . “ Yes , ” says another man . “ Let’s go back to the barn . ” And the men in the barn cannot catch him .
