VI . The Pig The Gingerbread Man runs on , and on , and on . Soon he comes to a little farmyard . In the farmyard there is a pig . He is a big , fat , pink pig with a little curly tail . He is lying in the mud in the sun . He is very happy there . The Gingerbread Man runs past the farmyard , and he calls out : “ I ran away from a little old woman and a little old man . I ran away from a barn full of men and a field full of men . I ran away from a cow . And I can run away from you , I can ! ” The pig opens one eye . Then he opens the other eye . He sees the little brown cake . “ Oink ! ” says the pig . “ What is this ? Food ! Good food ! Come here , little cake . I am hungry . I am always hungry . ” The pig gets up out of the mud . He runs out of the farmyard and after the Gingerbread Man . His short legs go trot , trot , trot on the road . The Gingerbread Man looks back and laughs . Then he shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” The pig runs and runs . But his legs are very short , and he is very fat . Soon he is hot and tired . He stops and sits down in the road . “ Oink , oink ! ” he says . “ How can a little cake run so fast ? ” Nobody answers him . The Gingerbread Man is far away . And the pig cannot catch him . The Gingerbread Man runs on . Now he is very proud . “ The old woman cannot catch me , ” he thinks . “ The old man cannot catch me . The men in the barn and the men in the field cannot catch me . The cow and the pig cannot catch me . Nobody in the world can catch me ! ” VII . The Fox The Gingerbread Man runs along the road . He sings as he runs . He is very happy and very proud . Then he sees a fox . The fox is sitting by the road . He has red fur , a long nose and a big red tail . He has sharp teeth and clever eyes . The Gingerbread Man is not afraid of the fox . He is not afraid of anybody now . He runs up to the fox , and he calls out : “ I ran away from a little old woman and a little old man . I ran away from a barn full of men and a field full of men . I ran away from a cow and a pig . And I can run away from you , I can ! ” The fox does not say a word . He only looks at the Gingerbread Man with his clever eyes . Then the fox gets up . He starts to run . The Gingerbread Man laughs and runs too . He looks back and shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” But the fox is not a cow . The fox is not a pig . And he is not an old man or an old woman . Foxes can run very , very fast . The Gingerbread Man runs faster . The fox runs faster too . The Gingerbread Man looks back again . Now the fox is not far away . He is very near ! “ Oh ! ” says the Gingerbread Man . “ Oh no ! ”
