I . The Poor Widow Once upon a time , there is a poor widow . A widow is a woman with no husband . Her husband is dead . The widow has one son . His name is Jack . She also has a cow . The cow is white , and her name is Milky - white . Jack and his mother live in a little old house with a garden . Jack’s room is at the top of the house , under the roof . It is a small room , but it has a window . Every morning , Milky - white gives milk . Jack and his mother take the milk to the market . They sell it there . With the money , they buy bread . That is how they live . They have nothing else . Only the milk from Milky - white . But one morning , Jack goes out to the cow with his bucket . He sits down next to her . And there is no milk . Not one drop . “ Mother ! Mother ! ” Jack calls . “ Come here , quick ! ” His mother runs out of the house . “ What is it , Jack ? ” “ Look . There is no milk today . Milky - white has no milk for us . ” His mother looks in the bucket . It is true . The bucket is empty . “ Oh no , ” she says . “ What can we do ? What can we do ? ” She holds her hands together . She is very worried . “ Don’t be sad , Mother , ” says Jack . “ I will go and find work . I am young and strong . I can work for money . ” “ We tried that before , Jack , ” says his mother . “ Nobody wanted you . Nobody gave you work . ” Jack says nothing . His mother is right . Nobody wants to give Jack work . “ No , ” says his mother . “ There is only one thing we can do . We must sell Milky - white . ” “ Sell Milky - white ? ” “ Yes . We must sell her . Then we can do something with the money . Maybe we can open a little shop . Or something like that . ” Jack looks at Milky - white . Milky - white looks at Jack . “ All right , Mother , ” he says . “ Today is market day . I will take Milky - white to the market , and I will sell her . Then we will see what we can do . ” “ Good boy , ” says his mother . “ Get a good price for her . She is a very good cow . ” Jack puts a rope on Milky - white’s head . He holds the rope in his hand . He says goodbye to his mother . Then Jack and the cow go off down the road to the market . II . The Funny Old Man It is a nice morning . The sun is out , and the birds sing . Jack walks down the road with Milky - white . The cow walks slowly behind him . Jack is not far from home when he meets an old man . The old man looks very funny . He stops in the middle of the road . “ Good morning , Jack , ” says the old man . “ Good morning to you , ” says Jack . Jack looks at the old man . “ How does he know my name ? ” he thinks . “ I don’t know this man . ” “ Well , Jack , ” says the old man . “ And where are you going ? ”
