“ Oh , please , madam , ” says Jack . “ Please give me something to eat . I had breakfast yesterday morning , and after that , nothing . It is true , madam . Really and truly . ” “ Go away , boy , ” says the woman . “ No , ” says Jack . “ If I stay here , maybe the ogre will eat me . If I go , I will die of hunger . It is all the same to me . So I will stay . ” The ogre’s wife looks at Jack for a long time . She is not so bad after all . She takes Jack into the kitchen . She gives him some bread and cheese and a jug of milk . “ Thank you , madam , ” says Jack . “ Thank you very much . ” Jack eats fast . But before he can finish , he hears a noise . Thump ! Thump ! Thump ! The whole house shakes . Somebody is coming . “ Oh no ! It is my husband ! ” says the ogre’s wife . “ What can I do ? Quick , boy ! Come here ! Get in here ! ” She opens the oven and pushes Jack in . She closes the oven door . And just then , the ogre comes in . V . The Bags of Gold Oh , the ogre is big ! He is very , very big . He has a belt , and on his belt he has three calves . Calves are young cows . He takes the calves off his belt . He throws them down on the table . “ Here , wife , ” he says . “ Cook me two of these for breakfast . ” Then the ogre stops . He smells the air . Sniff , sniff , sniff . “ Ah ! What is this I smell ? ” he says . And then he says in a big , loud voice : “ Fee - fi - fo - fum , I smell the blood of an Englishman ! Be he alive , or be he dead , I’ll have his bones to grind my bread ! ” In the oven , Jack is very afraid . The ogre can smell him ! “ Nonsense , dear . You are dreaming , ” says the ogre’s wife . “ Or maybe you smell the little boy from yesterday . You liked him very much for dinner . Here , go and have a wash and tidy up . When you come back , your breakfast will be ready . ” So the ogre goes out to wash . Jack wants to jump out of the oven and run away . But the woman comes to the oven . “ No , not now , ” she says quietly . “ Wait until he is asleep . He always has a little sleep after breakfast . ” So Jack stays in the oven . He sits very still . He does not make a sound . The ogre comes back . He sits down at the table , and he eats his breakfast . He eats and he eats . He eats for a long time . After breakfast , the ogre goes to a big box . He opens it , and he takes out two bags . They are bags of gold ! He puts the bags on the table . Then he sits down again , and he starts to count his gold . “ One , two , three , four . . . ” He counts and he counts . Slowly , his head goes down . His eyes close . Then he starts to snore . He snores very loudly . He snores so loudly that the whole house shakes again .
