It is the sound of the ogre’s feet . The ogre is coming ! The ogre’s wife puts Jack in the oven again . Everything happens just like before . The ogre comes in . He says , “ Fee - fi - fo - fum ! ” He sits down at the table . For breakfast , he has three oxen . Oxen are big strong animals , like cows . The ogre eats them all . Then the ogre says , “ Wife , bring me the hen that lays the golden eggs . ” So his wife brings the hen . She puts it on the table in front of him . “ Lay ! ” says the ogre to the hen . And the hen lays an egg . It is not a white egg . It is not a brown egg . It is an egg of gold ! In the oven , Jack hears everything . “ A golden egg ! ” he thinks . “ What a hen ! ” Then the ogre’s head starts to go down . His eyes close . He snores and he snores , and the house shakes . Jack comes out of the oven on tiptoe . He takes the golden hen from the table . Then he runs to the door , very fast . But this time , the hen makes a noise . “ Cluck ! Cluck ! Cluck ! ” The ogre wakes up . Jack is just outside the house . He hears the ogre shout : “ Wife , wife ! What did you do with my golden hen ? ” And the wife says , “ Why , my dear ? ” But that is all Jack hears . He runs to the beanstalk as fast as he can . He climbs down very , very fast . Soon he is home again . “ Mother ! Mother ! Look at this ! ” he calls . His mother comes out of the house . She sees the hen . “ A hen ? ” she says . “ Only a hen ? ” “ Not only a hen , Mother . Look . ” Jack puts the hen on the table . “ Lay ! ” he says . And the hen lays a golden egg . Every time Jack says “ Lay ! ” , the hen lays a golden egg . “ Oh , Jack ! ” says his mother . “ What a wonderful hen ! ” VII . The Golden Harp Now Jack and his mother have a golden hen . They have golden eggs . But that is not enough for Jack . He wants more . He wants to try his luck at the top of the beanstalk again . “ Mother , ” he says one evening . “ I am going up the beanstalk again tomorrow . ” “ Oh , Jack ! Again ? Be very careful , ” says his mother . So the next morning , Jack gets up early . He climbs onto the beanstalk . He climbs and he climbs and he climbs , until he is at the top . But this time , Jack is careful . He does not go straight to the ogre’s house . He goes near the house , and he waits behind a bush . He waits and he waits . Then the ogre’s wife comes out of the house . She has a bucket . She is going to get some water . Now Jack goes into the house very quietly . He looks round the kitchen . Where can he hide ? Not in the oven . The oven is not safe now . In the kitchen , there is a big copper pot . It is for washing clothes . Jack climbs into the copper pot . He puts the lid on the pot . He sits very still in the dark .
