Soon Jack hears a noise . Thump ! Thump ! Thump ! The ogre and his wife come into the kitchen . “ Fee - fi - fo - fum , I smell the blood of an Englishman ! ” shouts the ogre . “ I smell him , wife ! I smell him ! ” “ Do you , dear ? ” says the ogre’s wife . “ Then it is that little thief . He took your gold , and he took the hen that laid the golden eggs . He is in the oven , I am sure of it ! ” The ogre and his wife run to the oven . They open the door . But Jack is not there . Lucky Jack ! “ Oh , you and your fee - fi - fo - fum ! ” says the ogre’s wife . “ And how silly I am ! Of course ! It is the boy from last night . You caught a boy last night , and I cooked him for your breakfast . How could I forget ? And how silly you are ! You can’t smell the difference between a live boy and a dead one ! ” So the ogre sits down at the table , and he eats his breakfast . But he is not happy . Every now and then , he stops eating . “ But I am sure I can smell him . . . ” he says . Then he gets up , and he looks for Jack . He looks in the larder , where the food is . He looks in the cupboards . He looks everywhere . But , luckily , he does not think of the copper pot . After breakfast , the ogre calls out : “ Wife , wife ! Bring me my golden harp ! ” So his wife brings the harp . She puts it on the table in front of him . It is a beautiful harp , all of gold . “ Sing ! ” says the ogre . And the golden harp sings . It sings very , very beautifully . In the copper pot , Jack listens and listens . The harp sings and sings , and the ogre falls asleep . He starts to snore . He snores like thunder . VIII . The Axe Jack lifts the lid of the copper pot very quietly . He climbs out , as quiet as a mouse . He goes across the floor on his hands and knees . When he comes to the table , he stands up . He takes the golden harp in his arms . And he runs to the door . But the harp calls out very loudly : “ Master ! Master ! ” The ogre wakes up . He opens his eyes , and he sees Jack . The boy is running away with the golden harp ! Jack runs as fast as he can . The ogre runs after Jack . The ogre is very big , and he is fast . But Jack is in front . He runs this way and that way . And Jack knows where he is going . Jack comes to the beanstalk . The ogre is only twenty yards behind him . Then , suddenly , the ogre cannot see Jack . Where is the boy ? The ogre comes to the end of the road . He looks down . And there is Jack , below him . Jack is climbing down the beanstalk , as fast as he can go .
