“ Tomorrow , ” she says , “ I want little Morning for dinner . ” “ Oh , Madam ! ” says the cook . “ Do as I say ! ” says the queen mother . Now she speaks like an ogress , a woman ogre . “ And cook her with onion sauce . ” The cook knows that he cannot say no to an ogress . He takes his big knife and goes up to little Morning’s room . Morning is four years old . She runs to him and laughs . She puts her arms round his neck and asks him for sweets . The cook starts to cry . The big knife falls out of his hand . “ No , ” he thinks . “ I cannot do it . ” He picks up little Morning and takes her to his wife . He has a small house at the end of the yard . His wife hides the little girl there . Then the cook goes down to the yard , and he cooks a young lamb with a very good sauce . At dinner the next day , the queen mother eats it all . “ Wonderful ! ” she says . “ This is the best dinner of my life ! ” About eight days later , the queen mother calls the cook again . “ Tonight , I want little Day for supper , ” she says . The cook says nothing . But he knows what to do . He goes to look for little Day . The boy is only three years old . He has a little toy sword , and he is fighting a big monkey with it . The cook picks him up and carries him to his wife . She hides him with his sister . Then the cook cooks a young goat . The queen mother eats it and says it is wonderful . XI . The Young Queen All goes well for some time . But then , one evening , the queen mother speaks to the cook again . “ Now I want to eat the young queen , ” she says . “ With the same sauce . ” This time the poor cook does not know what to do . The young queen is not a little child . How can he trick the ogress now ? Where can he find an animal like her ? He is afraid for his own life . He takes his knife and goes up to the young queen’s room . But he is a good man . He does not want to surprise her . At the door , he bows . Then he tells her , very politely , what the queen mother wants . “ Do it , ” she says . “ Do what she told you . Then I will go to my children . My poor children ! I loved them so much . ” She thinks her children are dead . Somebody took them away , and nobody told her where . The cook starts to cry . “ No , no , Madam ! ” he says . “ You will not die . And you will see your children again . They are in my house . I hid them there . And I will trick the queen mother again . I will give her a young deer . ” He takes the young queen to his house . She sees her children , and she holds them in her arms . They all cry together , but they are happy tears . Then the cook cooks a young deer . The queen mother eats it for supper , and she is very pleased . “ Now they are all gone , ” she thinks . “ When my son comes home , I will tell him a story . I will say that wild wolves came and ate his wife and his children . ”
