I . Seven Fairies for a Baby A long time ago , there is a king , and there is a queen . They have a big palace and a lot of gold . But they are not happy . They have no children . The king and the queen try everything . They go to holy wells . They go to old churches in faraway places . They pray every day . But nothing helps . Then , one day , the queen has good news . She is going to have a baby ! And soon a little girl is born . She is a princess . The king is so happy . He wants a very fine christening for her . A christening is a special day in the church for a new baby . “ Our little girl needs godmothers , ” says the queen . “ And the best godmothers are fairies . ” In those days , fairies are godmothers to special children . Each fairy gives the baby a gift . It is a magic gift for the whole of her life . So the king sends his men to look for fairies . They look in every part of the country . They find seven . “ Seven fairies ! ” says the king . “ Seven gifts ! Our daughter is going to have everything . ” The day of the christening comes . The seven fairies stand round the baby . After the christening , everybody goes back to the palace . There is a great dinner for the fairies . The table is long and white . And in front of each fairy there is a special box of gold . Inside each box there is a spoon , a knife and a fork . They are made of pure gold , with red and white stones on them . The fairies are very pleased . They sit down at the table . II . The Old Fairy Then the door of the hall opens . A very old fairy comes in . Her face is grey , and her back is not straight . She walks slowly , with a stick . Nobody invited her to the christening . Why not ? Because for more than fifty years , this fairy has not come out of her tower . Everybody thinks she is dead , or under a magic spell . The king stands up . “ Welcome , good fairy , ” he says . “ Please sit with us . ” The servants bring a chair and a plate . They bring a spoon , a knife and a fork too . But there is no box of gold for the old fairy . The king has only seven boxes , one for each of the seven fairies . The old fairy looks at the other fairies . She looks at their boxes of gold . Then she looks at her plate . “ So , ” she thinks . “ They have gold , and I have nothing . They do not want me here . ” She is very angry . She says something terrible , very quietly , through her teeth . Only one person hears her : a young fairy . This young fairy sits next to the old one . The young fairy thinks : “ This old fairy is angry . Maybe she is going to give the baby a bad gift . I must speak last . If I speak last , I can help the baby . ” So , after dinner , when all the fairies stand up , the young fairy goes quietly to the wall . There are long , heavy curtains on the wall . She hides behind them .
