III . Seven Gifts Now it is time for the gifts . The first fairy goes to the baby . “ My gift is this , ” she says . “ The princess will be the most beautiful girl in the world . ” The second fairy comes . “ She will be as clever as an angel . ” The third fairy comes . “ She will be very graceful in everything she does . ” The fourth fairy says : “ She will dance perfectly . ” The fifth fairy says : “ She will sing like a nightingale . ” A nightingale is a small bird with a very sweet song . The sixth fairy says : “ She will play every kind of music , and play it perfectly . ” The king and the queen are so happy . Such wonderful gifts ! Now it is the old fairy’s turn . She goes slowly to the baby . Her head shakes . It shakes because she is old , but it shakes more because she is angry . “ And here is my gift , ” she says . “ One day , the princess will hurt her hand on a spindle . And she will die . ” Everybody in the hall shakes with fear . Then they all start to cry . A spindle is a thin stick of wood with a sharp end . Women use it for spinning . With a spindle , they make long threads from wool . In those days , there is a spindle in almost every house . At that moment , the young fairy comes out from behind the curtains . “ Do not cry , King and Queen , ” she says . “ Your daughter will not die . I cannot stop the magic of an older fairy . I cannot take her gift away . But I can make it softer . So listen . The princess will hurt her hand on a spindle . But she will not die . She will only fall asleep . She will sleep for a hundred years . Then the son of a king will come , and he will wake her . ” The king thanks the young fairy . But he is still afraid . The next day , he makes a new law . Nobody in the whole country can spin any more . Nobody can have a spindle in the house . Anyone who breaks this law must die . IV . The Room at the Top of the Tower Fifteen years go by , and then sixteen . The princess is now a young girl . And she has all the gifts of the six fairies . She is very beautiful and very clever . She dances , she sings and she plays music perfectly . One day , the king and the queen go away to one of their country houses . The princess stays at home in the palace . For fun , she runs all over the palace . She goes up and down the stairs . She goes from room to room . At last she goes up a small staircase in a tower . At the top , there is a little room . And in the room , an old woman sits alone . She is spinning with a spindle .
