The old woman does not know about the king’s law . Nobody told her . She is a good woman . “ What are you doing , my good woman ? ” asks the princess . “ I am spinning , my pretty child , ” says the old woman . She does not know that this is the princess . “ Oh , how pretty it is ! ” says the princess . “ How do you do it ? Give it to me . I want to try . ” The old woman gives her the spindle . The princess takes it . She is too quick with it , and a bit clumsy . Or maybe it is the old fairy’s magic . The sharp end of the spindle goes into her hand . And the princess falls down on the floor . “ Help ! Help ! ” shouts the old woman . People come running from every part of the palace . They put water on the princess’s face . They open her tight dress . They pat her hands . They rub her head with perfume . But nothing helps . The princess does not wake up . Just then , the king comes home . He hears the noise and runs up to the tower . He sees his daughter on the floor , and he remembers the fairies . “ The fairies were right , ” he says sadly . “ Fairies are always right . ” V . The Castle Falls Asleep His men carry the princess to the most beautiful room in the palace . They put her on a bed of gold and silver . She looks like an angel . Her face is still pink and her lips are still red . Her eyes are closed , but she breathes softly . So everybody knows she is not dead . “ Do not wake her , ” says the king . “ Let her sleep . It is not time for her to wake up yet . ” At that time , the good young fairy is very far away , in the land of Matakin . But a little dwarf brings her the news . This dwarf has magic boots , called seven - league boots . With one step in these boots , he can go seven leagues . That is about thirty kilometres ! The fairy leaves at once . About an hour later , she arrives in a chariot of fire , pulled by dragons . The king helps her out of the chariot . “ You did everything right , ” she tells him . Then she thinks for a moment . “ When the princess wakes up , a hundred years from now , all these people will be dead . She will be all alone in this old palace . She will not know what to do . That is not good . ” So the fairy takes her magic wand and walks through the palace . She touches everybody with it , but not the king and the queen . She touches the ladies and the maids . She touches the cooks and the kitchen boys . She touches the guards at the doors and the servants on the stairs . She goes to the stables too . She touches the horses and the men who look after them . She touches the big dogs in the yard . And she touches little Mopsey , the princess’s dog . Mopsey is lying on the bed next to the princess .
