And all of them fall asleep at once . They will sleep for a hundred years , like the princess . When she wakes up , they will wake up too . And they will be ready to help her . Even the fire in the kitchen goes to sleep . Even the meat on the fire goes to sleep . All this takes only a moment . Fairies work fast . The king and the queen kiss their dear daughter . She does not wake up . Then they leave the palace , very sadly . Then the king makes a new law . Nobody can go near the palace . But he does not really need this law . In fifteen minutes , trees start to grow all round the palace garden . Big trees and small trees , and bushes with sharp thorns . They grow very close together . Soon no man and no animal can get through them . From far away , people can see only the tops of the palace towers . That is all . It is the fairy’s magic , of course . Now the princess can sleep in peace . Nobody will come and look at her . VI . The Towers in the Wood A hundred years go by . Now there is a new king in the country . He is from a different family . And he has a son , a young prince . One day , the prince goes hunting with his men . They come to a very big , thick wood . In the middle of the wood , he sees the tops of some old towers . “ What are those towers ? ” he asks . Everybody has a different answer . “ It is an old castle , ” says one man . “ There are ghosts in it . ” “ No , ” says another man . “ All the witches of the country meet there at night . ” But most of them say : “ An ogre lives there . ” An ogre is a very big , very bad giant . Ogres eat people . “ This ogre catches little children , ” the men say . “ He takes them to the castle , and there he eats them . Nobody can follow him . Only the ogre can get through the wood . ” The prince does not know what to believe . Then a very old man from the village speaks . “ Your Highness , ” he says , “ more than fifty years ago , my father told me a story . His father told it to him . In that castle , there is a princess . She is the most beautiful princess in the world . She must sleep there for a hundred years . Then the son of a king will come and wake her up . ” The prince’s face goes red . His heart beats fast . “ The son of a king , ” he thinks . “ I am the son of a king ! ” He does not wait a moment . “ I am going into that wood , ” he says . “ Now . ” VII . The Prince Finds the Princess The prince walks towards the wood . And a strange thing happens . The big trees , the bushes and the thorns all move back . They make a way for him . At the end of a long , wide path , he sees the castle . He walks towards it . Then he looks back . His men are not behind him . The trees close again after him , and nobody can follow .
