But the prince walks on . He is young and in love , and a young man in love is always brave . He comes into a big yard . And what he sees there is terrible . There is no sound at all . Men and animals lie everywhere on the ground . They all look dead . But then he looks at the guards more carefully . Their faces are red , and their noses are red too . They have cups in their hands , with a little wine in them . They are not dead . They are only asleep ! The prince crosses a second yard , with a floor of white stone . He goes up the stairs . He comes into the guards ’ room . The guards stand in lines , with their guns on their shoulders . And they snore very loudly . He walks through many rooms . They are full of fine ladies and gentlemen . Some are standing , and some are sitting . But all of them are asleep . At last he comes into a golden room . There is a bed in it , and the curtains of the bed are open . On the bed he sees the most beautiful sight in the world . It is a princess , about fifteen or sixteen years old . She shines like the sun . The prince comes near . He is shaking . He falls down on his knees next to the bed . And now the hundred years are over . The magic is at an end . The princess opens her eyes . She looks at him with very kind , soft eyes . “ Is it you , my prince ? ” she says . “ You took a long time to come . ” The prince is so happy . He does not know what to say . He tells her that he loves her more than himself . His words are all mixed up . But she likes them even more that way . The princess is calmer . She had a hundred years to think about what to say ! And maybe the good fairy gave her sweet dreams in her long sleep . They talk and talk for four hours . And they still have a lot more to say . VIII . Supper After a Hundred Years At the same time , the whole palace wakes up . The maids , the cooks , the guards and the horses all wake up . They all remember their work , and they go back to it . And they are all very hungry ! They are not in love , like the princess . They need food . The head of the princess’s ladies comes in . She is hungry too , and she is not very patient . “ Supper is ready ! ” she says in a loud voice . The prince helps the princess to get up . She is wearing a very fine dress . But it is a very old kind of dress , with a high collar . The prince’s great - grandmother wore dresses like that ! The prince does not say a word about it . And the princess is still very beautiful , in her old dress .
