They go to the great hall . The walls of this hall are all mirrors . The princess’s servants bring the food . The musicians play their violins . It is very old music , from a hundred years ago . But it is very good music . After supper , the prince and the princess go to the little church in the castle . And there they get married . The next morning , the prince has to go home to the city . “ My father does not know where I am , ” he tells the princess . “ He will be worried about me . ” In the city , his father asks him : “ Where were you ? ” “ I got lost in the forest , ” says the prince . “ So I slept in a small house there . A poor man lives in it . He gave me cheese and brown bread . ” The king is a kind , simple man , and he believes his son . But the prince’s mother does not believe him . IX . The Queen Mother’s Secret After that , the prince goes hunting almost every day . Sometimes he stays away for three or four nights . And every time , he has a good story for his mother . The queen mother thinks : “ My son has a secret . And the secret is a girl . ” She is right . The prince lives like this with the princess for more than two years . And they have two children . First comes a girl . They call her Morning . Then comes a boy . They call him Day , because he is even more beautiful than his sister . The queen mother often talks to her son . “ A young man must have a bit of fun , ” she says with a smile . “ You can tell me everything . ” But the prince tells her nothing . He loves his mother , but he is also afraid of her . Why ? Because his mother is from a family of ogres . The old king married her only for her money . And people in the palace whisper a terrible secret . They say that when she sees little children , she wants to eat them . It is very hard for her to stop herself . So the prince never says a word about his wife and children . About two years later , the old king dies . Now the prince is the king . And now he is not afraid . He tells everybody about his wife . He goes to the castle in the wood with a lot of fine horses and men . He brings his wife and his children to the city . The young queen rides into the city between her two children . It is a great day for the city . But the queen mother is not happy . X . The Kind Cook Some time later , the young king goes to war . He must fight his neighbour , the Emperor Cantalabutte . “ I will be away all summer , ” he tells his mother . “ You must rule the country now . And please look after my wife and my children . ” As soon as he leaves , the queen mother sends her son’s wife and children to a house in the woods . It is far from the city , so nobody can see what happens there . A few days later , the queen mother goes there too . She calls the cook .
