I . The Garden Behind the Wall A man and his wife live in a small house . They are good people , and they love each other very much . But they are not happy . They want a child . For many years they wait and wait . But no child comes . Then one day the wife has good news . “ I think I am going to have a baby , ” she says . Her husband takes her hands . “ At last ! ” he says . “ God is good to us . ” At the back of their house there is a little window . From this window they can see a big garden . It is a lovely garden . It is full of pretty flowers and green plants . There are herbs too . Herbs are small plants for cooking . But there is a high wall all round the garden . Nobody goes into it . Nobody dares . The garden belongs to an enchantress . An enchantress is a woman with strong magic . This enchantress has great power , and the whole world is afraid of her . One day the wife stands at the little window . She looks down into the garden . There , near the wall , she sees a bed of rampion . Rampion is a plant with green leaves . People eat it in a salad . In German , the name of this plant is rapunzel . The rampion looks so fresh and so green ! The wife looks at it for a long time . “ Oh , I want some of that rampion , ” she thinks . “ I want to eat it . ” The next day she stands at the window again . She looks at the rampion again . And now she wants it more . The day after that , she wants it even more . Every day she wants it more and more . But she knows it is not possible . The garden belongs to the enchantress . Nobody can take anything from it . So the wife gets thin and weak . Her face is pale and grey . She does not eat much . She does not smile . She sits by the window all day and looks at the rampion . Her husband sees this , and he is afraid . “ My dear wife , what is wrong ? ” he asks . “ Are you ill ? ” “ Oh , ” she says , “ it is the rampion . The rampion in the garden behind our house . I must have some . If I cannot eat some of it , I will die . ” The husband loves his wife very much . He looks at her thin , pale face . And he thinks : “ I cannot let my wife die . I must get her some rampion myself . It does not matter what it costs . ” II . Over the Wall It is evening . The sun is going down , and the sky is grey . The husband leaves the house quietly . He walks to the high wall . He looks up . The wall is very high . But he climbs it slowly . At the top he stops and looks down into the garden . Nobody is there . All is quiet . He climbs down into the garden . His heart is beating fast . He runs to the rampion and quickly takes a handful . Then he climbs back over the wall and runs home .
