“ Here you are , my dear , ” he says . “ Here is your rampion . ” His wife is so happy ! At once she makes a salad with it . She eats it all . It tastes very , very good . “ Thank you , ” she says . “ Oh , it is so good ! ” That night she sleeps well . But the next morning she goes to the window again . She looks down at the rampion . And now she wants it three times as much as before . “ I must have more , ” she says . “ Please bring me more . ” The husband is not happy about this . But he wants some peace and quiet . And he wants his wife to be well . So he must go into the garden one more time . All day he thinks about the high wall and the enchantress . He is afraid . But his wife asks again and again . “ Please , ” she says . “ Just a little more . ” “ All right , ” he says at last . “ I will go tonight . ” That evening , when it is getting dark , he climbs the wall again . He climbs down into the garden . But at the bottom of the wall he stops . He is terribly afraid . The enchantress is standing in front of him ! She is old and tall . Her eyes are hard and angry . “ How dare you ! ” she says . “ How dare you come into my garden ! You are taking my rampion like a thief . You will be sorry for this ! ” “ Oh , please , ” says the husband . “ Please be kind to me . I only did it because I had to . My wife saw your rampion from our window . She wanted it so much . She got very ill . She said to me , ‘ I will die without it . ’ ” The enchantress listens . Slowly her face changes . She is not so angry now . “ Is this true ? ” she asks . “ Yes , it is true , ” says the husband . “ Then you may take as much rampion as you like , ” she says . “ But you must give me something too . ” “ What must I give you ? ” asks the husband . “ Your wife is going to have a baby . You must give me that child . The child will be safe with me . I will take care of it like a mother . ” The husband is so afraid that he cannot think . He says yes to everything . “ Yes , yes , ” he says . “ You can have the child . ” Then the husband takes the rampion and climbs back over the wall . His legs are shaking . He goes home to his wife with the rampion in his hands . III . The Tower with No Door Some months later the wife has her baby . It is a little girl . At once the enchantress comes to the house . She looks at the baby for a long time . “ Her name is Rapunzel , ” she says . “ Rapunzel , like my rampion . ” The husband remembers his promise . He cannot say no now . The enchantress takes the baby in her arms and carries the child away . The enchantress keeps her word . She takes good care of the child . And Rapunzel grows into the most beautiful child under the sun . Her eyes are bright . Her voice is sweet . And her hair is long and fine , like gold .
