When Rapunzel is twelve years old , the enchantress takes her into a forest . In the forest there is a tall tower . It is made of stone . The tower has no stairs and no door . There is only one little window , right at the top . The enchantress shuts Rapunzel in the tower . Now Rapunzel lives up there , high above the trees . She is all alone . But how does the enchantress get into the tower ? There is no door and there are no stairs . When the enchantress wants to go in , she stands under the little window . Then she calls : “ Rapunzel , Rapunzel , let down your hair ! ” Rapunzel has wonderful hair . It is very , very long , and as fine as gold thread . She wears it in two long plaits . When she hears the voice of the enchantress , she takes down her plaits . There is a hook by the window . Rapunzel puts the plaits round the hook . Then she lets them fall . Down , down , down they fall , all the way to the ground . The enchantress holds the gold hair in her hands . And she climbs up it , like a rope . “ Good girl , ” says the enchantress at the top . She climbs in through the window . “ Good morning , Dame Gothel , ” says Rapunzel . Dame Gothel is the name of the enchantress . The old woman comes every day . But she always goes away before evening . Then Rapunzel is alone again . Sometimes Rapunzel looks out of the window . She sees the green trees . She sees the birds in the sky . “ Dame Gothel , can I go down to the forest one day ? ” she asks . “ No , ” says the old woman . “ You stay here . Here you are safe . ” So Rapunzel stays in the tower . The days are long and quiet . To pass the time , she sings . She sings in the morning , and she sings in the evening . Her voice is very sweet . It goes out of the window and far into the forest . IV . The Song in the Forest One or two years go by . Then one day a young man rides through the forest on his horse . He is the son of the king . The king’s son rides past the tower . Suddenly he hears a song . It is so lovely that he stops his horse . He stays very still and listens . “ Who is singing ? ” he thinks . “ What a sweet voice ! ” It is Rapunzel . She is alone in the tower , and she is singing to pass the time . The king’s son wants to see her . He wants to climb up to her . He looks for the door of the tower . He walks all round it . But there is no door . There are no stairs . There is only the little window , high up at the top . “ How strange , ” he says . “ How can anybody get in ? ” At last he rides home to his father’s castle . But he cannot forget the song . It is in his heart all the time .
