That night he cannot sleep . He thinks about the sweet voice . “ Who is she ? ” he thinks . “ Why is she in that tower ? And how does she live there with no door ? ” The next day he rides into the forest again . He stands near the tower and listens to the song . And the next day he comes again . He comes every day . He cannot stay away . One day he is standing behind a tree near the tower . Then he sees an old woman . She is walking to the tower . It is the enchantress ! The king’s son does not move . He watches her . The enchantress stands under the window and calls : “ Rapunzel , Rapunzel , let down your hair ! ” And down comes the long , gold hair ! It falls all the way to the ground . The enchantress takes hold of it and climbs up . Then she goes in through the window . The king’s son can hardly believe his eyes . “ So that is the ladder ! ” he says quietly . “ That is how you go up . Then I will try my luck too . ” He waits behind the tree . After some time , the enchantress climbs down again and goes away into the forest . The next day , when it begins to get dark , the king’s son comes back . He goes to the tower . He stands under the window . And he calls : “ Rapunzel , Rapunzel , let down your hair ! ” At once the hair falls down . The king’s son takes hold of it . And he climbs up , up , up to the window . V . The Ladder of Silk Rapunzel looks at the young man at the window . She is terribly afraid . She has never seen a man before . “ Who are you ? ” she cries . “ What do you want ? ” “ Please do not be afraid , ” says the king’s son . “ I will not hurt you . ” He climbs in and stands by the window . He talks to her quietly , like a friend . “ I heard your song in the forest , ” he says . “ It touched my heart . I had no rest . I came back every day to listen . And I had to see you . ” Rapunzel listens . His voice is kind . His eyes are kind too . Slowly her fear goes away . Then the king’s son takes her hand . “ Rapunzel , ” he says , “ will you be my wife ? ” Rapunzel looks at him . He is young and handsome . And she thinks : “ He will love me more than old Dame Gothel does . ” So she says yes . And she puts her hand in his . “ I want to go away with you , ” she says . “ But I do not know how to get down . There are no stairs . And I cannot climb down my own hair ! ” The king’s son laughs . But then he looks sad . “ What can we do ? ” he asks . Rapunzel thinks for a moment . Then she smiles . “ I know ! ” she says . “ Bring some silk with you every time you come . I will make a ladder from it . When the ladder is ready , I will climb down . And you will take me away on your horse . ”
