“ Yes ! ” says the king’s son . “ I will bring silk every time . ” They agree on a plan . The king’s son will come every evening . The old woman comes during the day . She must never see him . So every evening the king’s son comes to the tower . He calls , and Rapunzel lets down her hair . He climbs up . And every time he brings some silk . Every day Rapunzel works on the ladder . Her hands are quick . The ladder is getting longer and longer . One evening she shows him the ladder . “ Look , ” she says . “ It is already this long . ” “ Good , ” he says . “ Soon it will be ready . Soon you will be free . ” Another evening he looks at the ladder again . “ How many more evenings ? ” he asks . Rapunzel looks at the silk in her hands . “ Not many , ” she says . “ A few more , and it will be long enough . Then we can go . ” When the old woman comes , Rapunzel hides the ladder . Dame Gothel does not see it . She does not know about the king’s son . She does not know anything . VI . Snip , Snap One morning Dame Gothel comes to the tower , as always . She stands under the window and calls : “ Rapunzel , Rapunzel , let down your hair ! ” Rapunzel lets down her hair . The old woman holds it and starts to climb . Rapunzel stands at the window and pulls the hair up . The old woman is very heavy . Rapunzel pulls and pulls . It is hard work . At last Dame Gothel climbs in through the window . And Rapunzel says , without thinking : “ Tell me , Dame Gothel , why are you so much heavier to pull up than the young king’s son ? He is up here with me in a moment . ” Then she stops . Her face goes red . But it is too late . The old woman looks at her . The old woman’s eyes are cold and hard . “ You bad child ! ” she cries . “ What is this I hear ? The king’s son ? I kept you far from the whole world . But you tricked me ! ” “ Please , Dame Gothel , ” says Rapunzel . “ Please listen to me ! ” But the old woman does not listen . She is too angry . The old woman takes Rapunzel’s long , gold plaits . She puts them twice round her own left hand . With her right hand she takes a pair of scissors . And snip , snap ! She cuts off the hair . The lovely gold plaits fall onto the floor . Rapunzel cries and cries . But the old woman has no pity for her . Then the old woman takes poor Rapunzel away from the tower . They go a long , long way . At last they come to a desert . It is a wild and empty place , far from any town . “ You will live here now , ” says the old woman . And she goes away . Rapunzel is all alone . She has no home and no friends . She is very poor and very sad . Every day she thinks about the king’s son . “ Where is he now ? ” she thinks . “ Will I ever see him again ? ”
