VII . The Thorns On the same day , in the evening , the old woman goes back to the tower . She takes the cut plaits with her . She ties them to the hook by the window . Then she waits . Soon the king’s son comes . It is getting dark . He is happy . He has more silk in his hands . He stands under the window and calls : “ Rapunzel , Rapunzel , let down your hair ! ” The old woman lets the hair down . The long , gold plaits fall to the ground . The king’s son takes hold of the hair and climbs up . He climbs in through the window . But his dear Rapunzel is not there . The old enchantress is there . She is looking at him with angry , wicked eyes . “ Aha ! ” she laughs . “ You want your dear one ? The pretty bird is not singing in the nest any more . The cat has taken it . And the cat will scratch out your eyes too ! ” “ Where is Rapunzel ? ” cries the king’s son . “ What have you done with her ? ” “ Rapunzel is lost to you , ” says the enchantress . “ You will never see her again . Never ! ” The king’s son is full of pain . He does not know what to do . He runs to the window . And he jumps . Down , down he falls from the high tower . He does not die . He lands in some thorn bushes under the tower . But the sharp thorns go into his eyes . When he opens his eyes , he sees nothing . All is dark . The king’s son cannot see any more . He is blind . VIII . Two Tears The king’s son gets up slowly . He cannot see the tower . He cannot see the trees . He walks with his hands in front of him . He walks into the forest . He does not know the way . He does not know where he is going . He is hungry , but he has no food . He finds roots and berries in the forest , and he eats them . That is all he has . Every day he walks . Every day he cries . Sometimes he hears the birds . Sometimes he hears the wind in the trees . But he never hears the sweet voice he loves . “ Rapunzel , ” he says . “ My dear wife . Where are you ? ” Nobody answers . Weeks go by , and months . Then years go by . The king’s son walks from forest to forest . His clothes are old now . His face is thin . But he never forgets Rapunzel . At last , after some years , he comes to the desert . It is the same wild and empty place . Rapunzel lives here , in this desert . She is very poor . But she is not alone now . She has two little children . They are twins , a boy and a girl . Every evening Rapunzel sits with her children . She tells them about a tall tower in a forest . She tells them about a young man with kind eyes . “ Where is our father ? ” asks the little boy . “ I do not know , ” says Rapunzel . “ But I think about him every day . ” “ Will he come one day ? ” asks the little girl . “ I hope so , ” says Rapunzel quietly .
