I . An Emperor Who Loves Clothes This is a story from many , many years ago . There is an emperor , and he loves new clothes . He loves them more than anything in the world . He spends all his money on clothes . He wants to look fine every day and every hour . The Emperor has soldiers , but he does not care about them . There is a theatre in his city , but he does not go to it . Plays do not make him happy . Only one thing makes him happy . He likes to ride through the streets in his coach . Then all the people can see his new clothes . “ Look ! There is the Emperor ! ” the people say . “ What a fine yellow coat ! ” “ Yesterday it was a red coat , ” says a woman . “ And tomorrow it will be a new one , ” says her husband . “ He never wears the same coat twice . ” The Emperor hears them , and he smiles . He likes to hear these words more than any song . The Emperor has a coat for every hour of the day . At nine he wears a blue coat . At ten he wears a red one . At eleven he wears a green one . And so it goes on , all day long . In other countries , people ask , “ Where is the King ? ” And the answer is , “ The King is with his ministers . ” But in this country , people ask , “ Where is the Emperor ? ” And the answer is always the same . “ The Emperor is in his dressing room . ” The Emperor’s dressing room is very big . There are clothes on every wall . There are coats and hats and shoes . There are shirts of silk and cloaks of gold . There is a tall mirror in the middle of the room . The Emperor stands in front of the mirror for hours . He turns to the left . He turns to the right . “ Do I look good in this ? ” he asks his servants . “ Very good , Your Majesty , ” say the servants . “ And in this ? ” “ Even better , Your Majesty . ” The Emperor’s city is big and busy . It is a happy place . Every day , new people come to the city . They come from all over the world . They sell things and buy things in the market . They tell stories in the streets . And one day , two new men come to the city . II . Two Strangers Come to Town The two men walk into the market . They wear old coats . They carry big bags . “ Who are you ? ” ask the people in the market . “ We are weavers , ” says one of the men . “ We make cloth . ” “ We make the finest cloth in the world , ” says the other man . But this is not true . The two men are not weavers . They are cheats . They want money , and they want it fast . “ What is so special about your cloth ? ” asks a woman . “ Our colours are very rich , ” says the first man . “ Our patterns are very fine . But that is not all . ” “ Our cloth has a secret , ” says the second man . “ Some people cannot see it . ”
