“ They are so busy , ” people say . “ They want to finish the Emperor’s new suit . ” The two men act as if they take the cloth off the looms . But there is no cloth , so their hands only move in the air . Then they take big scissors . They cut the air . Snip , snip , snip ! Then they take needles . There is no thread in the needles . But they sew and sew all the same . At last , in the morning , they stand up . “ There ! ” they say . “ The Emperor’s new suit is ready ! ” VIII . The New Suit The two men go to the palace . They go into a big hall with a tall mirror . The Emperor comes into the hall with all his lords . The two men hold up their arms . They hold their hands as if they are holding clothes . “ Here are the trousers ! ” says the first man . “ Here is the coat ! ” says the second man . “ And here is the cloak ! ” says the first man . “ The clothes are as light as a spider’s web , ” says the second man . “ You can almost think that you have nothing on . But that is the best thing about them ! ” “ Oh , yes ! ” say all the lords . But they cannot see anything , because there is nothing to see . “ Your Majesty , ” say the two men , “ please take off your clothes . Then we can help you with your new suit . Please stand here , in front of the big mirror . ” The Emperor takes off all his clothes . The two men pick up the new suit , piece by piece . They put the trousers on him . They put the coat on him . They put the cloak on him . But the new suit is not there , because it was never there . The Emperor turns in front of the mirror . He turns to the left and to the right . He looks at himself from every side . “ Oh , how well it looks ! ” say the lords . “ How well it fits ! What a lovely pattern ! What colours ! What a fine suit ! ” Then the master of the parade comes in . “ Your Majesty , ” he says , “ your men are ready outside . They are holding the canopy . ” “ I am ready too , ” says the Emperor . “ Does my suit not fit me well ? ” He turns in front of the mirror one more time . He wants the lords to see that he likes his new clothes . The two servants come to the Emperor . It is time for them to carry the long end of his cloak . They bend down to the floor . They move their hands as if they are picking up the cloak . Then they hold their hands up high . They cannot see a cloak . But they do not want anyone to know .
