I . The Golden Ball This story is from long , long ago . In those days , wishes can still come true . There is a king , and he lives in a big castle . He has some daughters , and all of them are pretty . But the youngest daughter is the prettiest of all . She is so lovely that even the sun is surprised . The sun is very old , and it sees many things . But every time it shines on her face , it is surprised again . Near the castle there is a big , dark forest . In the forest there is an old lime tree . A lime tree is a tall tree with soft green leaves . Under this old tree there is a well . A well is a deep hole in the ground with water in it . The water in this well is dark and cool . The youngest princess loves this place . On hot days the castle is very warm . But in the forest , under the old tree , it is cool and quiet . One hot morning , the princess goes to her father . “ Father , it is so hot today , ” she says . “ Can I go to the well in the forest ? ” “ Yes , my child , ” says the king . “ Go and sit in the cool air . But come back for dinner . ” “ I will , ” she says . She takes her golden ball with her , and she goes out into the forest . She walks under the tall trees . It is dark and green there . At last she comes to the old lime tree . She sits down next to the well . For a while she sits and looks at the water . She listens to the leaves . But soon she is bored . There is nobody to talk to . There is nothing to do . So she takes out her golden ball . It is a small ball , and it is made of gold . It shines like a little sun . She throws the ball up high , and she catches it . Up it goes , and down it comes . Up and down , up and down . She laughs . This is her favourite game . The golden ball is her favourite toy . She loves it more than her dresses . She loves it more than all her other toys . She plays with it every day . “ Up you go ! ” she says , and she throws it again . II . The Frog in the Well The princess throws the ball up again . This time it goes very high . She holds up her little hand for it . But the ball does not fall into her hand . It falls on the ground next to her . It rolls over the grass . It rolls and rolls , and it goes right into the well ! Splash ! The princess jumps up . She runs to the side of the well and looks into the water . For a moment she can see the golden ball . It shines under the water . Then it goes down , down , down , and it is gone . The well is very deep . It is so deep that nobody can see the bottom .
