“ Oh no ! ” says the princess . “ My ball ! My golden ball ! ” She begins to cry . She cries and cries . She cries louder and louder . Nothing can help her . She is so sad . Then she hears a voice . “ What is wrong , Princess ? Why are you crying like that ? You cry so much that even a stone feels sorry for you . ” The princess stops crying . She looks round . Who is speaking ? There is nobody under the tree . She cannot see anybody in the forest . Then she looks at the water again . There , in the well , is a frog . He puts his big , ugly head out of the water . He looks up at her with his round eyes . “ Oh , it is you , you old water - splasher , ” says the princess . “ I am crying for my golden ball . It fell into the well , and now it is gone . ” “ Be quiet , and stop crying , ” says the frog . “ I can help you . I can go down and get your ball . But what will you give me if I bring it back ? ” The princess looks at the frog . She wipes her eyes . “ Can you really do it ? ” she asks . “ Yes , I can , ” says the frog . “ The well is my home . I know every stone in it . But first tell me : what will you give me ? ” III . The Promise “ Anything you like , dear frog , ” says the princess . “ You can have my dresses . You can have my pearls and my jewels . You can have my golden crown too . ” She touches the little golden crown on her head . It is her best crown . But the frog says no . “ I do not want your dresses , ” he says . “ I do not want your pearls or your jewels . And I do not want your golden crown . ” “ Then what do you want ? ” asks the princess . The frog looks at her for a long time . Then he says : “ I want you to love me . I want to be your friend . I want to play with you every day . I want to sit next to you at your little table . I want to eat from your little golden plate . I want to drink from your little cup . And at night I want to sleep in your little bed . ” The princess opens her eyes wide . A frog at her table ? A frog in her bed ? “ Promise me all this , ” says the frog , “ and I will go down into the well . I will bring your golden ball back to you . ” The princess thinks about her ball . She wants it back so much . “ Oh yes , ” she says . “ I promise . I promise you all of it . Just bring me my ball ! ” But in her head she thinks : “ What a silly frog ! What silly things he says ! He lives in the water with the other frogs . He sits there all day and croaks . How can a frog be a friend to a person ? He can never come to the castle ! ” The frog hears her promise , and he is happy . He puts his head under the water , and down he goes .
