The princess waits . She looks at the dark water . Nothing happens . The water is still . Is he coming back ? Or is he gone too , like her ball ? Then , after a short time , the water moves . The frog swims up again . And in his mouth he has the golden ball ! He comes out of the water and throws the ball on the grass next to her . “ There you are , Princess , ” he says . “ Here is your ball . ” IV . Wait for Me ! The princess is so happy . She picks up her ball and holds it tight . “ My ball ! My lovely golden ball ! ” she says . “ It is back ! ” She looks at it . It shines in the sun , the same as before . She does not look at the frog . She does not say thank you . She turns round , and she runs away with her ball . “ Wait ! Wait ! ” calls the frog . “ Take me with you ! I cannot run as fast as you ! ” He hops after her . Hop , hop , hop . But his legs are short , and she is already far away . “ Croak ! Croak ! ” he calls , as loudly as he can . “ Princess , wait for me ! ” But it does not help him . The princess does not listen . She does not even look back . She runs through the dark forest , all the way home to the castle . The frog stops . He sits on the grass under the old lime tree . The forest is quiet now . The princess is gone . The poor frog is sad . There is nothing he can do . So he turns round slowly and hops back to the well . He jumps into the water , and he goes down to his home again . At the castle , the princess goes to her room . She puts the golden ball next to her bed . She looks at it and smiles . “ My lovely ball , ” she says . “ I will never lose you again . ” That evening she eats dinner with her father . She talks and laughs . She does not say a word about the frog . Then she goes to bed . Her bed is small and pretty . It has silk covers , and it is soft and clean . She lies down and closes her eyes . For a moment she thinks about the frog in the well . “ A frog at the castle ? ” she thinks . “ No , that is silly . He cannot come here . He lives in the water . ” And she goes to sleep . The next morning she does not think about the frog at all . She forgets him . And she forgets her promise too . V . A Knock at the Door The next day it is dinner time at the castle . The king sits at the big table . All the lords and ladies of the court sit with him . The youngest princess sits at her little table next to her father . She eats from her little golden plate . The room is full of people . Everybody talks and laughs . The food is good . Then there is a noise outside . Splish , splash . Splish , splash .
