The noise is on the stairs . The stairs of the castle are made of marble . Marble is a white stone , hard and cold . Something wet is coming up the marble stairs , step by step . Splish , splash . Splish , splash . The noise comes closer and closer . At the top of the stairs it stops . Then there is a knock at the door . Knock , knock ! A voice calls : “ Princess , youngest princess , open the door for me ! ” The princess gets up from her chair . Who is it ? She goes to the door and opens it . And there , in front of the door , sits the frog ! He is wet from the well . He looks up at her with his round eyes . Quickly the princess shuts the door . Bang ! She runs back to her chair and sits down . She tries to eat , but she cannot . Her face is white . She is very afraid . The king looks at his daughter . He can see that her heart is beating fast . “ My child , what is wrong ? ” he asks . “ Why are you so afraid ? Is there a giant outside the door ? Does he want to take you away ? ” “ Oh no , Father , ” she says . “ It is not a giant . It is a horrible frog . ” “ A frog ? ” says the king . “ What does a frog want from you ? ” The princess looks down at her plate . “ Oh , dear Father , ” she says . “ Yesterday I was in the forest . I sat by the well and played with my golden ball . Then my ball fell into the water . The well is so deep , and I cried and cried . So the frog brought my ball back for me . But first he wanted a promise . He asked and asked , so I said , ‘ You can be my friend . ’ But I never thought he could come out of his water ! And now he is outside the door , and he wants to come in to me . ” Just then there is a second knock at the door . Knock , knock ! And the frog calls again : “ Princess , youngest princess , open the door for me ! Do you not remember ? By the cool water of the well , you made me a promise . Princess , youngest princess , open the door for me ! ” VI . A Promise Is a Promise The king puts down his knife . He looks at his daughter , and his face is serious . “ My daughter , ” he says , “ you made a promise . And when you make a promise , you must keep it . Go and open the door . Let him in . ” The princess does not want to go . But he is her father , and he is the king . So she gets up , and she goes slowly to the door . She opens it . The frog hops into the room . Hop , hop , hop . The lords and ladies stop talking . They all look at the little frog . The frog follows the princess across the room , step by step . When she stops , he stops . When she walks , he hops after her . At last she comes to her chair and sits down . The frog sits on the floor next to her chair . He looks up at her .
